Relationships are important to recruiting, but for many of the higher rated recruits, school choice is also a business decision. The recruit (and his family) wants to know how well a given school prepares a player for a professional league - winning with a good brand is important to continuing this success.
Most folks thought Zion Williamson was going to Clemson before Duke came in late and gained his commitment. It would seem reasonable that Duke could present a better argument than Clemson regarding preparing ZW for the NBA.
We have finished second to Georgia in recent years on several highly rated running backs. Here to, Georgia was probably able to make a connection regarding the role of their running backs and making the NFL.
This idea has helped Clemson beat the competition when recruiting the defensive line (IMO the second most important position) and the most important position on the field – the quarterback. DW’s success with Clemson’s brand (it works in the NFL too) has enabled us to land HJ and TL.
IMO Justyn Ross chose Clemson because of the obvious NFL connection; and also because he had trust with our coaches. IMO our coaches convinced him that we would do a better job than Alabama of preparing him for the NFL – good publicity for future recruits.
This is an important year for Clemson to reaffirm our program and brand as one of the best in the nation. IMO, Clemson has the talent to have an impressive (perhaps dominating) year and win the national championship. It’s important for our team to perform well this year so that our recruiting can continue on a level with Alabama, Ohio State, etc.
