Recruit you were most excited about before they came to CU

Dec 11, 2014, 3:13 PM

Mine was Sammy Watkins. I wasn't really aware of following recruiting when CJ was being recruited. DW is a close second.

Wily Korn

Go ahead and laugh at me.

Dec 11, 2014, 3:22 PM

"Geez this guy looks like a system QB, i really don't see how he's a fringe 5-star prospect." Granted i didn't expect him to be the complete bust that he ended up being, but i never saw star potential in him either.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Roscoe Crosby would be number 1

for me, followed by CJ

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Roscoe Crosby would be number 1

Dec 11, 2014, 3:29 PM

Bellamy for me. Pretty sure he was a 5-star. Possibly 4. Even past his recruiting, his first play as a Tiger was a 56 yard run for TD. I still wonder just how could he could of been, had he not gotten in the dog house and kicked out eventually. He would of been a senior this year, if I am not mistaken.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I wouldn't consider Korn a bust

Dec 11, 2014, 6:52 PM [ in reply to Man i watched Korn a couple of times on TV and thought ]

The guy had significant damage done to his shoulder and he never recovered. He just couldn't make the throws he needed to after his surgery.

Haha, speaking of history, Does anybody know what recruiting was like back in the 30's -50's? obviously not very much coverage except maybe a newspaper clipping about a local athlete. However, when do you think the buzz started to circulate about Banks McFadden?

So Spiler, Sammy, Crosby, Watson, seem to be the most common. A couple for Bellamy... wish he had a better attitude. with about 20 more pounds that guy would have been something special. Think Ray Ray is a step slower but equally as explosive with a better attitude and ball skills.

Dec 11, 2014, 3:58 PM

I remember watching his HS film and was like d@mn, he's going to be one of the best linebackers in Clemson history. Unfortunately it didn't turn out that way, injuries throughout his whole career at Clemson has played a big affect on what could have been. I wish the coaches would of RS him his freshman year as he was still recovering from a torn ACL from his senior year at HS. He has played really well this year though. I hope an NFL team will give him a shot

Was going to be very, very good. But I never thought he would end up being this good! Wife and I made plans, bought air tickets, etc for the BC game but DW4 got hurt the game before. We did get to see him come off the bench at Georgia in Athens. Cole played pretty good the first half I thought. Georgia's defense make adjustments at the half and coach Morris didn't

Dec 11, 2014, 4:46 PM

I just remember sitting in a quiet computer lab on campus at UNCC, like it was yesterday, hitting refresh on the Tnet recruit updates page every 30 seconds.

That was the craziest NSD that I can remember, seems like there were so many undecided prospects at the beginning of the day, but one by one they chose Clemson. It was hard to keep quiet as I called and texted a bunch of my Clemson fan buddies to share in the excitement, but I just couldn't help myself! When you sign guys like Stephone, Steward, Peake, Bellamy, Townsend, Sammie, Crawford, Martavis, etc. in one class, it's time to celebrate.

And then Stephone had that quote at the end of the day that wrapped it up perfectly, something like "Clemson is coming". Been a huge fan of his ever since.

was HUGE at the time. We were trying to come out of the deep funk of the late 90s and he was THE quarterback our staff wanted. It was rough times back then and he was the hope we needed. I would argue that his presence helped bring in some serious talent. His career at Clemson was mostly spent behind the legendary Woodrow Dantzler but he stands out as a huge "get" for me.

Roscoe would have been the first Sammy Watkins. No question. I knew the kid and he was a hell of a person. It is really unfortunate how his life got turned upside down at such a young age. From what I understand he's doing pretty well these days though.

Spiller was the first guy we grabbed and shocked the nation. I remember his HS highlight reel. The first 4 minutes or so were all touchdowns. Most 5* guys have a minute or so of great clips and then they taper off. CJ probably could have submitted every run he had and made it a highlight tape.

I loved Bowers' stone faced unwavering commitment. There never was once an article about him going elsewhere. Think Chad Smith commitment, but the best player in the country.

And on I could go. I love every player that decides to come to Clemson. And that's the truth!
