Recruit Rankings and the All ACC Team

Jul 25, 2018, 5:50 PM

Using Rivals rankings, I looked over the preseason All ACC team and found the following:

5* = 3
4* = 7
3* = 9
2* = 5

While it certainly helps to recruit the best athletes, star rankings are not the be all, end all. Many players that don't get the publicity or take longer to develop turn out just fine. Our coaches do a good job of judging and developing talent, so don't be so concerned the next time we get a commitment from a 3*, he may make All ACC some day. That said - I'd still like to close with a couple of 5's.

Totally Agree with you there...

Sometimes that can be misleading because of the way opportunities present themselves. We may not have a receiver get all-ACC because we have a bunch of guys logging snaps as opposed to teams where one receiver is basically their only dynamic weapon, who gets way more touches. Nobody has won a title with a blue-chip ratio under .56 since such things have been recorded. We were actually really low on the ratio when we won.

Agree. This can certainly be true at positions like

running back or wide receiver.

Look at the numbers on rosters

Of each of those levels of recruit. The numbers would show that a higher percentage out of the 5 star and 4 star pool made it on the All-ACC team than the 3 star pool.

You’re always going to have 3 stars that turn into 5 star players in college and vice versa but the most successful teams have the most stars, especially if you want to compete for championships.

I remember Danny Ford signing an unrecruited, 2-star linebacker simply because he had a spot to fill, and the boy looked pretty good, so what the heck.... His name was Levon Kirkland.

Nice repeat post

But if you read mine I said there will always be guys that outperform their ranking. Plus recruiting services were nowhere near as reliable 25+ years ago before the internet allowed these services (and coaches for that matter) to evaluate exponentially more players than they did before.

Yes there will always be Kirkland’s, Renfrow’s, Jarrett’s, etc but to win a title you also need Watson’s, Williams’, Wilkins’, Lawrence’s, etc.

Right. It doesn't matter how many stars they come in with

just how many the "have" when they leave.
