I wouldn't want him throwing anything for 2 weeks.

Re: FB Update: Deshaun Watson already throwing a football?

Oct 20, 2014, 8:50 PM

I think his issue is that he could not grip the football. as long as he is in a splint he should be fine.

But he still needs time to heal. He broke something right?

I will go with the doctors and trainers on this one, think he could be back by Wake if we really needed him.

There's no such thing as a stupid question, just stupid people who ask questions.

Watson's fracture of the index metacarpal was a spiral....

Oct 21, 2014, 8:57 AM

fracture vs. a lateral fracture. Hence the reason for the 4 screws and no plate. Also, because a length wise spiral fracture gives the bones more surface area to be in contact with, the healing process is actually quicker than with a lateral fracture. He will have have 32 days to heal before the GT game which is barely enough.

Lets hope that Paul Johnson does not put a bounty on Watosn and enocurage his defense to go after Watson's hand. I remember a Duke palyer doing this to Steve Fuller mid way through the 1977 season, in a scrum type pile up after a play, and nobody could tell who did it. He broke Fuller's left hand fortunately) and he played the next 5-6 games with a soft cast on hand.

Re: FB Update: Deshaun Watson already throwing a football?

Oct 20, 2014, 9:54 PM [ in reply to Re: FB Update: Deshaun Watson already throwing a football? ]

yes he did...but they are holding it together with screws. It is not like a regular break that needs no motion to heal. When a broken bone is fixed with screws, it is recommended that early movement and excerise is started ASAP to prevent stiffness (which he sure doesnt need) and scar tissue from forming around the screws and in the finger. The splint is used to hold in place where the surgery was performed...this is to prevent the bones from pulling apart from the screws. As the bone heals, more and more exercise will be used. Plus I feel sure they are using stimulation every day to help in the healing. Medical science has come a long way.

went through theraphy starting the next day. Pampering is not in the therapist's vocabulary.

I guess not. Can't help but worry when a guy like Peake keeps trying to come back but can't get healthy.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Undoubtedly you have never broke any bone and then

Oct 20, 2014, 10:14 PM

Big difference though between a small broken bone in a hand that recovers fast and the main issue is grip and pressure vs an ACL tear in a knee which takes longer to heal and can have harder rehab with a main issue of weight support, ability to absorb impact with weight, and be able to stay stable under quick momentum shifts.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

There are a LOT of variables with an ACL tear...

Oct 21, 2014, 9:01 AM

they usually come along with some other damage to cartilage and/or other ligaments that all work together to provide stability (or not).

There's a mental aspect to blown up knees too that I never experienced with broken fingers, and I had several of both.

Actually, I think that scares some people. If we recall, Dabo and Morris kept saying Stoudt had done nothing to lose his starting position. I don't think that will happen, but who knows.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: He'll have to earn his play time back from Stoudt...

Oct 21, 2014, 1:32 AM

I think if Watson is ready by GA tech game he will start. Stoudt did good against BC but if that would have been Watson running on last play before halftime I think it would have been a TD instead of a FG. After those two close games does anyone kind of wished that Watson could throw left hand also or am I the only one,ha just wondering. GO TIGERS!!

Oct 20, 2014, 10:21 PM [ in reply to Re: why would you throw any dang thing when you broke your finger a week ago and have screws in it?? ]

Wrong....when you have a finger break in the hand it is recommended that you work it out and get the grip strength back. It's all about grip! There is absolutely nothing wrong with him throwing a nerf ball that has no weight behind it.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

My point was that if it was bad enough to require surgery and have screws set into place

Oct 20, 2014, 10:42 PM

Then it was probably a more serious fracture. shouldnt the bone be in a splint for longer than a week? I know when I broke my ankle, I was in a cast for 6 weeks before the took it off and let me move it around

2024 orange level member flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

As long as Watson is walking on his hands, then

Oct 20, 2014, 10:45 PM

Comparing your ankle to his finger is like comparing Clemson and SCar.....there just is no comparison.

So you had a broken ankle and now know more than the medical team at Clemson? Makes sense

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I think the point of the screws

Oct 20, 2014, 10:54 PM [ in reply to My point was that if it was bad enough to require surgery and have screws set into place ]

Are to simply expedite the healing process not that they were absolutely needed because the break was so severe. If you or I had the same break they would not bit screws in it. I had a broken bone in my hand in a different finger but same spot behind the knuckle. The dr set it, splinted it, and it was healed in 4 weeks with no pins.

Need to test the screws out, make sure they are screwed in tight. That's my professional opinion.

recommended when screws have been placed in the bone. The sooner the better. Odds are, they had him exercising that finger right after surgery. If he does not exercise it, it becomes stiff and scar tissue will form around the screws. It is not like it is a hard football.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

The nerf ball allows him to keep

Oct 21, 2014, 8:28 PM [ in reply to why would you throw any dang thing when you broke your finger a week ago and have screws in it?? ]

his throwing motion fresh without stressing his finger. Throwing without a ball would hurt his shoulders and tendons in his elbow(try throwing hard without anything in your hand and see). The nerf isn't therapy(I'm guessing) for his finger, but rather a an aid so he can maintain the rest of his mechanics.
