On This Date: 1956 (20)Clemson- 7 South Carolina- 0

October 25, 1956
Columbia, SC

Led by Joe Wells’ 85 yards, the Tigers downed South Carolina, 7-0, in front of 34,000 fans at Carolina Stadium.

The 1956 ACC Champion Clemson Tigers were led by All-ACC First-Team tailback Joe Wells and quarterback Charlie Bussey, who was a Second-Team All-ACC selection. Wells was the key in Clemson’s Split-T offense as he set an ACC rushing record with 803 yards in 1956.

The winning score came in the first quarter when Bussey pushed over for the touchdown from a yard out. The Clemson defense made it hold as they intercepted the Gamecocks two times and recovered three fumbles.

South Carolina moved the football to the Tigers three-yard line with less than three minutes to play in the game when fullback Don Johnson fumbled the ball while trying to go in for the tying score. Bussey pounced on the ball in the end zone, just getting to the football before South Carolina’s Alex Hawkins did.

After giving the ball back to Carolina with little time left on the clock, Clemson’s Alex Dukes intercepted Mackie Prickett’s pass to seal the victory.

"IDIOT POSTER OF THE MONTH SO FAR...GWP-- You have won IPM Award for your failure to completely comprehend a clear post & then choose to attack someone who points out your ignorance. While you are not yet in the same No Class Catagory as deRoberts, ClemTiger117 & Tigerdug23, you are getting closer to the Sewer Dwellers." - coachmac

Was there but really don't remember games until 1959/1960. At 10 years of age, I was able to really remember much more. My Uncle and Father played football in late 40s and early 50s.
I remember from a young age this "crazy bald headed man" (Coach Howard) that would knock on my grandparents (West Columbia) front door at 10:30pm/11pm after recruiting trips to the coast/Pee Dee; wanting to have a good meal before heading to "god's country". The only person who could do this to my grandmother after she had been asleep for 3-4 hours. But he took care of "her boys".
The man could tell funnier stories than anyone that I knew. I always made sure to find him at games after he retired and hear another good story about about my Father, Uncle or one of their friends.
Always respected a tall man that was usually with him. Later found out the guy was Banks McFadden. But Coach Howard always "held the floor" when he was in a room. Coach McFadden never had a chance to say much.
