LB Depth Chart - What Would You Do?

Jul 16, 2012, 9:49 PM

Now that we know Steward will be ready to go...what would you do?

Base:

MIKE: Stephone Anthony/Spencer Shuey/BJ Goodson
WILL: Tig Willard/Corico Hawkins
SAM: Tony Steward or Lateek Townsend or Quandon Christian/Justin Parker

Nickel:

Boundary LB: Stephone Anthony/Quandon Christian
Field LB: Tig Willard/Tony Steward
Nickel/Box CB: Travis Blanks/Cortez Davis or Xavier Brewer

What do you guys think? Personally, I think most of our LB's outside of a few can play multiple positions.

What would be your alignment for base and nickel packages?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

well imo

Jul 16, 2012, 9:52 PM

the day tony stewards ready Id start tony stephone and lateek...those three need to be on the field together to give us our most dominant group

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: well imo

Jul 16, 2012, 9:55 PM

I agree. I think Willard is a good player for us, though. He has been consistent for the past two years and has earned the right to start.

But I just don't see how Hawkins and Christian can give us any advantage at all when we have those athletes rearin' to go.

I think Townsend might need to be worked in. We all know he's explosive and loves to hit but I think he needs to get acclimated to the discipline of the college game before being thrown to the wolves.

Our group looks 10x better than it did a year and a half ago, though.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: well imo

Jul 16, 2012, 9:58 PM

Man Id just line lateek up and give him very little rules and say just go get the football...lol...TH\hat cats gonna be a war daddy. I agree about Tig...but id put steward right behind him and ease him in. I want christian to be good but he just isnt consistent, maybe he will be this year. But the three of Stephone, tony, and lateek are playmakers and Im willing to bet BJ will be a stud as well

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: well imo

Jul 16, 2012, 10:00 PM

I agree. Just think...This group will be juniors and seniors next year. It's going to be special.

I like Lateek's energy but with a zone drop scheme you have to be disciplined and play your gaps as a LB.

I am looking forward to watching this group player. I think these guys could be the fastest and most dynamic group of LB's in the nation when all is said and done.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: well imo

Jul 16, 2012, 10:05 PM

Oh I know...I was just teasin bout my comment on Lateek...Honestly we have the best depth at LB Ive seen in a long time we honestly have two starting units. We are also now building qaulity depth on the DL...if we finish with who I think we will finish with in recruiting...our defense is going to be really good in 2013 and beyond

Most on the team will tell you Christian is one of the top 5 athletes on the team.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: well imo

Jul 16, 2012, 10:02 PM

I left him out at first because of the depth at LB...but not on purpose.

He is definitely a great athlete. I just feel that he was caught out of position a lot of times. The coaches even commented a couple of times talking about how they have veteran players who aren't playing their assignments.

I've always liked both Quandon and Corico, but it's time for them to step up if they want to fend off the younger guys.

Re: LB Depth Chart - What Would You Do?

Jul 16, 2012, 10:00 PM

The coaches know better than I do, but I would have Lateek out on the field as much as possible. The cat is a head hunter who is not afraid to hit someone. He is a beast. Can we just put them all on the field at once? If nothing else, that group will defiantly hurt someone.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: LB Depth Chart - What Would You Do?

Jul 16, 2012, 10:04 PM

I hear that. I watched film from the last few games last year and you can instantly tell when he was on the field. He didn't play many snaps, but when he did...he just jumped off the screen at how he was flying off the ball.

He's the type of player who wan'ts to be on the field agains the Coots and the big boys and he wants to do damage.

I wouldnt put lateek and tony at same position.I also think parker is going to shine this year,,,was really impressed with him in spring

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Re: LB Depth Chart - What Would You Do?

Jul 16, 2012, 10:03 PM

I know Lateek is a SAM. I was just assuming Tony was because of his speed and coverage ability.

It's hard to tell, because in college there's not as much of a "mold" for LB skillsets as there is in the NFL...with the exception of maybe MIKE.

Like I said, we could have any series of alignments which is why I was wanting to see what you guys thought.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Re: LB Depth Chart - What Would You Do?

Jul 16, 2012, 10:06 PM

Its a great problem to have

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I think I'd have Steward at the WILL or even MIKE

Jul 16, 2012, 10:10 PM

he can play any of the three positions but with the SAM and MIKE being locked down he could definitly take the starting spot at that position after Willard leaves. I really like Tig. He always played tough and was the most reliable of the starters last year.

Another option is to move Steward to MIKE. He is bigger than Anthony and truthfully I expected him to go too MIKE nad Anthony to go to WILL when they committed to Clemson. Anthony might be a MIKE because of how intellignet he is and the MIKE is the QB of the defense. These two players can play anywhere and I'm srue Venables will have fun mixing and matching.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: I think I'd have Steward at the WILL or even MIKE

Jul 16, 2012, 10:14 PM

I kind of a gree that Id like to see anthony playing on the edge more..and put Tony at mike....eiether way those 2 guys along with lateek changed the dynamic of this defense and the kids we recruit

I agree...he will be nice coming off the bench at Mike...like I said I honestly believe we have truly 2 sets of starting LBs

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Teek is like a bulldog

Jul 16, 2012, 10:16 PM [ in reply to Re: I think I'd have Steward at the WILL or even MIKE ]

point him in a direction and tell him go. I really want to see him make an impact and once he gets a bit more disicplined will be a monster. That being said if I was Venables playing against GT next year where the key to stopping the option is hitting the QB. I would pull Teek to the side and tell him no matter what happens TAKE HIS HEAD OFF! and leave it at that. If GT's qb is still playing by the end of the game then that's one tough fb player

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Teek is like a bulldog

Jul 16, 2012, 10:18 PM

Lateek may put him in the hospital

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

That'll be his fault for not taking a knee every down

Jul 16, 2012, 10:20 PM

that's what I'd do if I saw this kind of front 7 coming for me. RN and Adams alone would give me nightmares and to see then lined up against me I'd take a knee until coach pulled me and ouot and yelled at me. Then I'd calmly tell him to snap the ball and see what happens to him

I agree with this. I can definitely see Steward at MIKE (like you said...he's a big guy...I think he's pretty smart, too). Put Anthony at WILL and Townsend at SAM and you have one of the best LB corps in the country in 2013 (after they've gotten experience together).

ESPECIALLY if Tajh stays and Brooks puts on about 20 lbs and becomes that hand-picked Chad Morris RB!

Ford won't be here...but McCullough, Seckinger and Cooper will be.

Re: Combined with a talented secondary

Jul 16, 2012, 10:27 PM

I like JJ McCullogh at TE ...I think brooks will be a bigger version of AE but with better receiving skills

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Brooks is still too small

Jul 16, 2012, 10:28 PM

I saw him in person yesterday and he still looks like a WR more so then a RB. He needs about 10-15 pounds of pure muscle.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Jul 16, 2012, 10:29 PM

He will get there...he has only had a spring

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I know. He'll have plenty of time to get there

Jul 16, 2012, 10:30 PM

Problem is with Bellmay gone we'll have to play him this fall and I'm anxious about how he'll do being so light. I don't want him getting hurt

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: I know. He'll have plenty of time to get there

Jul 16, 2012, 10:33 PM

How small is he...I thought he was like 190

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

That sounds about right. He looked kind of lanky

Jul 16, 2012, 10:36 PM

again, like a freshman WR. I'm pretty sure I'm being paranoid. He got good reviews from what I've heard so far. A BIG concern for me is Vic Beasly. I saw him Sunday as well and he is WAY to small for the WDE position at least if they want him to be an every down back. He looked like a basketball player as he was tall, kind of thin and lanky. He really needs the training table to put on good weight. we'll have to rely on either Aiken or Lawson to come in and give us some good minutes next year

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: That sounds about right. He looked kind of lanky

Jul 16, 2012, 10:38 PM

Youll probably only see Vic in passing situations til he can get bigger and hold up against the run...I think youll see him used some in the 3-4 packages atleast thats what I saw in the spring game...used him as bascially a standup end

Jul 16, 2012, 10:47 PM [ in reply to I think I'd have Steward at the WILL or even MIKE ]

and two with Steward in the game. They ran it right at his gap and he stepped up in the hole and stuffed it. Now, 3rd and 2, they took Steward out, ran it in the same gap. First down. I saw Steel do that several times last year with Tony and even Lateek in the South Carolina game. I can only hope the defense improves half as much as the offense did last year.

Jul 16, 2012, 10:10 PM

I would move Parker to a rush-end spot. Not sure why that hasn't happened yet.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: LB Depth Chart - What Would You Do?

Jul 16, 2012, 10:13 PM

He's listed at 230. He could probably do it in a situational role. Most of the time in a 4-3, OLB's don't blitz....but they could do what the Denver Broncos are doing with Von Miller. They have 4 down lineman and then bring Von Miller up even with the hip of the strongside defensive end and have him rush from there. It's impossible for the guard to get over there in time because of the speed, and the RB isn't a good blocking matchup.

I know he's fast and it would be a nice wrinkle to add.

Is it "just [you]" to be a smug ###### as well? Yes, it is just you.

That's why the title of the thread is "what would you do."

That whole premise entails us not being coaches, but giving our opinions on what we would do if we were. Some people like to talk about the actual game of football instead of just engaging in the usual message board gossip.

If you have nothing to add, there are plenty of conference expansion/gossip threads. I just happen to want to talk about the depth chart. Sue me.
