The "Thinning Of The Herd" 11/9 Edition (Bama Down)

Nov 10, 2019, 8:07 AM

My weekly public service to anybody out there who believes there will be more than 4 undefeated teams at the end of the year vying for a place in the College Football Playoffs. It won’t happen, despite each year worry and angst are abound with people wondering if we will have a decision to make among undefeated teams come playoff time.

The inevitable will happen….it’s called “the thinning of the herd”

Recap Of Last Week
As noted last week, the two head to head matchups of undefeated teams was going to create natural thinning as both the Big 10 and the SEC began the process of eating their own.

I gave note that I thought one of the other unbeaten would also fall, and that almost came true in the Big 12 shootout between Baylor and TCU…but Baylor kicked a field goal with 47 seconds to tie the game at 9. Yes. 9. Not 9 TD’s…9 points. Big 12 football at its best! Baylor went on to win in OT…avoiding the thinning by the smallest of margins.

The herd is now at 5….and we are just getting started in November. But the scramble to be the best 1 loss team has now commenced.

Next Week: Guaranteed Thinning Will Take Place
None

"Upset Alert”
LSU at Ole Miss…this one has all the markings of a letdown game for the Tigers. And the Grove can be distracting.
Minnesota at Iowa…let’s see how the boat rowers handle a bit of success. See letdown game above.
Oklahoma at Baylor…Not really sure this is an upset, the upset would be if the Okies lose.

Will Keep Winning....For Now
Ohio State at Rutgers…The Battle of the Scarlets is really no battle at all.
Wake Forest at Clemson…Wake had one job, to remain ranked for one more week, but they could not do it as they sent Bud Foster out in style.

I'm not sure that I would bank on Minnesota to be favorites against Iowa either. They will be ranked higher, but Vegas very well may see it differently.

Great point***

I am like you Scott. I think LSU either loses to Ole Miss or Texas A&M the last week of the season. Arkansas in between, but I don't think Arkansas (poor Chad) could even beat a team like BC or Louisville and maybe even Syracuse. Minnesota also has Wisconsin along with Iowa on its schedule as well. I think Clemson and Ohio State are the only ones to finish undefeated. I sure would love to play the semifinal in Atlanta.

There is zero chance Ole Mi$$ beats LSU

aTm may provide a challenge if Mond has a game like he did against us last year. At least they have a quality defense

LSU will run through that weak conference just like Ohio State and Clemson until the playoffs.

Agreed, the only thing stopping LSU this year is Clemson

LSU could also lose to Georgia. Georgia is getting going. Also, Ohio State is as good as anyone right now.

Don't know much about Iowa but from the Minnesota/Penn St. game I learned that neither team had a defense but their offenses were only slightly better. If either somehow got to the playoffs they would be totally flattened. Their only hope to avoid major beat downs in their bowls is if their opponents have just as bad defenses as they do.

I"m rooting for either Utah or Oregon to win out

Nov 10, 2019, 4:33 PM

and get in. They are more interesting to me than Penn State, Minnesota, etc.

The Ducks will be there...

Nov 10, 2019, 5:10 PM

I don't see LSU making it unscathed...and if bye week-itis doesn't bite them, the Khakis may actually be finding their mojo to take tOSU down. I'm so looking forward to Auburn putting Dawgs and pachyderms out of their respective miseries...woo hoo! And to cap matters, once the Plainsmen pull off that double-header, I'm gonna laugh my rear end off when Malzahn takes the Arkansas gig! Think about, succeed or fail, Arkansas won't be able to can him for years after burning $21 million in the past two years on severance. ;) If Gus is smart, he's going to have one divine retirement!

LSU has the easiest path of the SEC teams....but I agree...no guarantee they will run the table.
