recruiting followers

Jan 18, 2016, 8:33 PM

How is Powell almost a 5* on rivals but not even ranked by the other two?

because recruiting services know jack about recruiting, and offers should really be about the only qualifier on a kid's ability or potential.

In the logic of recruiting services, if a kid doesn't go to Alabama,Ohio State LSU, USCor Notre Dame, they can't be "that" good and rates them low if at all.

I agree, but even rating by offers don't tell the entire story. For instance, Tavien Feaster, who is arguably the best APB in high school only has 12 offers. I think it's a tale of "why offer, we can't get this kid anyway", but ultimately doesn't tell the whole story. I stopped paying attention to recruiting rankings a while back. Maybe they should follow the golden rule most programs follow..."if Clemson offers, he must be an amazing player, so let's offer him too".

I was just wondering I noticed a lot of our guys were rated way different on the different sites. That was just the most glaring.

My son lives in Greenville, N.C. and he says he is the real deal.

Because rating a player isn't a exact science. Some sites do more homework then others, or have people in charge that can't evaluate a kid if they're life depended on it. For instance. ESPN's top man for NFL draft picks said steve smith would never play receiver in the NFL, said he'd be a kick returner. So its just not ever exact. But fear not! If they said he was a two star you can look at his film and you'll see that his kid is a baller.

They had Marshall a 5* and gurly a 4* if you watch both of their film ? You would not see how gurly was lower. Gurly was clearly the better back to me and showed it in college. They don't know. Its an informed geuss .

I don't know. Marshall's highlight reel from his Jr year was incredible. I don't know enough about high school football down there so maybe he was in a lower division playing against weak opponents, but his video was on of the best I'd seen at the time.

Did Hunter Renfrow have any stars ?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

He had a lot of offers from Southern Conf schools

Jan 19, 2016, 7:53 AM

yes, he had a couple stars

I tend to trust Rivals

Jan 19, 2016, 8:08 AM

more so than the others. ESPN for instance had Sammy Watkins rated a 4 star beneath Charone Peake. How'd that turn out? Rivals also had Nuke Hopkins (who was underrated by everyone) from the class before at least ranked higher than the others. That said, it's still a very inexact science. Heck even NFL teams, with all the money and research they spend on it, routinely whiff on top draft picks.

There's a lot of factors that go into whether a kid is going to be great in college. Yes we can look at his hudl from high school along with combines etc. and make a star estimate, but ultimately what stars don't take into account is the kid's work ethic, his commitment to improvement, his attitude, and his adaptability to college life.

As the old saying goes "I rather have a 2* athlete with a 5* heart than a 5* athlete with a 2* heart."

Re: recruiting followers

Jan 19, 2016, 9:18 AM

Well, he's a high 4* because the kid is a beast - physically developed and tons of upside. He's ranked lower on the other 2 sites because they haven't seen him play.
