Lunge Electricians, please help!

Nov 28, 2018, 11:58 AM

I've got a 1925 house that has crazy wiring due to being old. I was doing a little work on cleaning up some messy wiring in one part of the house where the breaker box used to be. Now I've got a circuit that's not working and I can't find out the problem. I've tried sniffing the wires back to the place where I "cleaned up" and can't find the starting point for the circuit. It's no big deal to me but my wife wants the light working for our Christmas party so I'm to the point of calling in a professional. I have a few questions:

1. Should I just go ahead and burn down house?
2. If I bring in a professional will they see the incredible wiring mess and have to bring the entire house up to code or will they simply be able to fix the single issue on the 1 circuit?
3. If the answer to number 2 is having to bring house up to code any recommendations on a resource in the Charlotte area to handle the problem without bringing up to code.

Buddy of mine bought a 1920's bungalow on Magnolia in the late 90's (before they developed the Crockett Park site) for about $110k, and added a 2nd floor, completely redesigned the exterior....don't remember him ever having to talk to the historic commisison even though it had some flavor of designation.

I usually try to get a quote over the phone for work with a fake address first. Otherwise it's the special pricing sheet which means I get royally fcked.

Nov 28, 2018, 12:31 PM

did you run the wires back to the breaker box or back to the mess of wires? You need to run the wires to that outlet back to the end. If that's a hot wire or a hot breaker then there may be a short somewhere in the wires.

If you run it all the way back and it's not connected to anything hot, cut it and splice it into a circuit that is.

Then up your fire insurance just in case.

Track the wire

Nov 28, 2018, 12:39 PM

Is the circuit hot at the breaker? Could be a bad breaker. put one end of your voltmeter on the breaker screw and the other on the ground bar. Unless you were doing work on some outlets idk why a circuit wouldn't be working other than a breaker breaking...

another option would just be to run new electrical line. ?This is hard to help you when you are not providing details on what exactly you did

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Well, I'm pretty much giving up on fixing it myself.

Nov 28, 2018, 1:27 PM

The old breaker box was a birds nest of wires where the new breaker runs in power and connects to all the old wiring in the house. I disconnected and reconnected all the wires but now I can't find the wire in the breaker box that runs to the circuit that is not working. It worked fine before so I don't think it's a short somewhere along the circuit. I'm baffled as to what is going on. I have a sniffer but it doesn't work for #####. There's a few old wires that I think are candidates for being the circuit that isn't working, I attach them to good hot and neutral wire from the new breaker box and nothing.

Probably still not enough to trouble shoot on here. I'm really just trying to find out if I can get professional help without having to drop 20k-30k on all new electrical.
