RIP John Lennon. 12/08/1980. Do you remember where you were?

I was in a high rise hotel in St Louis, out of town on business, anxious to get home and meet my Winthrop student girl friend before she went home for Christmas. Don't agree with all of his utopian beliefs, but he didn't deserve to be gunned down on the sidewalk by a wacko. He could rock more than any other Beatle, but due to the timing of his death, this one resonates most with me.

and a couple covers from Rock 'n' Roll, released in '75, the year I graduated from high school. Album was panned at the time, but includes a couple of gems in my book. I liked old school tunes back then already.

I started at Northwestern High School as a 9th grader when it opened. (seniors were not forced to go to the new school, and stayed at RH High, so they sent 9th graders there instead of Jr High), Emmett Scott HS, the historically black HS with an AWESOME marching band and the best steppers and drum cadence in York County, had closed. It was a different time.

civilized people don't live in Manassas. Although maybe it was still tolerable back then. I just know I had a lot of trouble just getting to the Chik Fil Yay off the interstate the other week.

I remember Howard Cosell breaking the news to us

in the middle of the MNF game.
Though tragic and sad, I was never a Beatles fan, so I didn't quite "get" the public response over it (same when Elvis died).
I also remember some radio stations playing only Beatles music 24/7 for about a week (ugh).

Wife, dogs and I were camping in the Ocala Forest. Totally cut off - no cell phones, internet or even radio. Found out about it when we emerged and bought a paper on the way into some breakfast joint a day or two later. Was like "s***!" Pretty well cast a pall on the trip.

assuming you saw Cosell's announcement at TTT, and were not too drunk yet to comprehend. Shirley you weren't watching MNF while you were studying for an incomprehensible exam. Nobody ever did that.

Watching MNF with dad.
The next day all the teachers under 30 were all weepy.
My English teacher just sat and sobbed at her desk all period. Then we studied Lennon lyrics as poetry until Christmas.

Had an eerie experience............

Two weeks or so after he was killed, I took the family to NYC fot the holidays. I always loved the Beatles and went to the Dakota to see where the incident occurred and pay my respects like so many fans from around the world. I was standing across the street from the entrance and looked up and Yoko was standing there just standing there and staring down at me and I at her for what seemed forever but probably lasted only a few minutes. I'll never forget the look on her face. Lost, sad, bewildered. Just one of those moments.

people my age were too young to be Beatles fanatics, I guess. But Lennon had a popular solo catalog at that point,in addition to his fame status. At least we were old enough to recognize the end of an era. And maybe not just 'cause the 4 Beatles wouldn't Come Together again.
