Playing at home is key. Winning the first game is key.

Jun 3, 2013, 10:06 AM

Hosting helps on both fronts.

Hosting guarantees nothing of course, but improves your odds exponentially.

Considering the "home field" advantage some schools

Jun 3, 2013, 10:52 AM

like the baseball programs Clemson, MissSt, chickentech, FlaSt, etc. have, can't help but agree. Its tough to go into those ennvironments and win. And its doubly tough to drop the first regional game and battle back out of the losers bracket

Is home field really that important in baseball?

An honest question as I don't go to many baseball games. I just don't see a crowd of 5,000 giving anywhere near the sort of advantage that you see in college football.

Miss State laughs at 5,000

There's more to it than just the size of the crowd ...

Jun 3, 2013, 12:14 PM [ in reply to Re: Considering the "home field" advantage some schools ]

The comfort level of being at home in familiar surroundings is an advantage.

Not having to travel is an advantage, and yes, having 5,000 fans on your side is a big boost as well.

There's a reason why schools bid big bucks to have the privilege of hosting an NCAA Regional and why the top 8 national seeds are so coveted when they guarantee a Super Regional.

Ranger, home field advantage is just as important in baseball as football imho. Witness our last game in cootlumbia. A couple thousand chickens yelling at the plate ump will get into his head after a while and can alter his decisions on the strike zone. At least it looked that way to me. Not saying that's why we lost to Liberty but I can't help but feel we would have fared better in DKS.

key point

No excuses - but Columbia is probably the worst place we

Jun 3, 2013, 11:41 AM

could have played. Any place else might not have been friendly, but at least not hostile.

Ditto on ACC tournament, Durham it is an advantage to State and UNC (our first two opponenets), no doubt.

Friday didn't seem hostile on tv

Jun 3, 2013, 11:46 AM

place seemed pretty quiet and empty.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

There were maybe 5 more wins

Jun 3, 2013, 1:27 PM [ in reply to No excuses - but Columbia is probably the worst place we ]

this team could have found in the regular season that would have taken care of the hosting issue. Fact is, they beat FSU that first game, then packed it up for the season.

Starting your ace in game 1 is key....

Jun 3, 2013, 11:44 AM

If you don't win game 1, you're screwed the rest of the way. no matter what your seed.

If you can't beat Liberty with your #2 or #3 guy

Jun 3, 2013, 11:57 AM

then you don't deserve to advance anyway. Erwin, who started on Friday, only gave up 2 earned runs (3 total).

The bigger problem is that Boulware, Krieger, Gibson, Bradley, and Triller/Costigan were all held hitless.

I totally agree. You have to win that first game

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Absolutely. Jack gets 100% of the blame for game 1, imo*****

it's possible that the hosts could go 16-0 this year

Jun 3, 2013, 9:52 PM

All the hosts have either won their regional or are leading the final game except for Oregon who is still in the first inning.

Home is great and all but people forget that at tournament time, the home team is the home team usually because they have a better RPI/season than the other teams invited so of course it should be no surprise that the favorite wins more often whether home or away.
