face it, this powder keg has been waiting to blow

May 29, 2020, 7:13 PM

it has been a culmination of a lot of things, but the context of this scene in MN will always be Trump's Covid19 depression. A racist cop who killed a man was the spark. But no one can deny that these last few months have ripped off a few layers of bandaids that was barely holding things together.

People are still under a ton of stress right now financially. This reaction demonstrates the pent up anger. Now imagine if we continue this pattern. It will be much worse.

And while Trump's Covid19 depression might have been the immediate context, this is also the culmination of several decades worth of economic policy rot that has favored the parasitic investor class above all else. This is the segment of humanity that produces absolutely nothing with their minds or bodies. We've allowed them to poach the value of our hard work for too long.

What you are seeing is just a taste of what is to come if we don't make a correction.

and there are some similarities but this feels like a deeper issue. Police brutality comes and goes. We've got people who have been standing in bread lines since March. It isn't pretty out here on the streets of the good ole USA.

So the context of the Trump Covid19 Depression is what it is. He's the President who likes his name on everything so it is apropos that he would get his name on this new economic reality that he has helped to foster.

One minor correction: the investor class were actually the ones to get the largest slices of government cheese. They haven't done squat to help the working man except drain cash and resources via some bean counter's ridiculous cap table.

there are two classes of investors

May 29, 2020, 8:30 PM

I’m talking about the extractive elite who are merely parasites and don’t deserve any consideration as they actually produce zero value, yet are able to extract mountains of wealth without any sense of propriety or dignity for their country, let alone the men and women upon whose minds and backs they extracted it from.

There are obviously people who invest with a more noble mindset, one that is sustainable. They pay taxes and reinvest in their communities and reward worker contributions of value with good salaries. If they put their country first, I’ll happily give them their due. Unfortunately, while they are a critical ingredient to our success as a nation, they are dwindling in number.

Something has broken along the way.

I will agree with you that a certain class of folks

May 30, 2020, 12:46 AM [ in reply to I remember 1992 well ]

were behind the quarantine / lockdown mantra. It is more than "investor" class, because that is purely an economic term. If speaking only of economics, a guy who loans $1 million to a start up then sits on his butt getting dividend checks and capital appreciation is a lot more useful to society than a talking head making $2 million/year for reading notes. (Yes, they do more than read notes, but everything past the first $100K is for reading the notes on air).

If we want to say "political class", we have a president whose qualification was being a billionaire, and the previous president bragged about being broke when he came into office, and while in office pontificated about "wealth inequity", and now, 8 years later, owns more in real estate alone than most 10 people make in a lifetime. Two presidents, different parties, one came rich and the other got rich in office, neither hosting any poor people or refugees. One of those - won't say which - had almost zero in charitable giving in the last 1040 of his we saw. There's your wealth inequity, sitting in the White House for the last bunch of decades.

So, I don't know the name for it, but there is today a class of folks who are above it all, and who pontificate to the rest of us from their sheltered perches. Wealthy, politicians, academia and media. Roll those together and put a name on it. If you'll do that, I'll agree with your post.

That class has divided into two power groups. The working folks hold the votes and the money (money is all about daily production, don't ever forget that: when production stops, taxes stop, purchasing stops, and the value of money goes to zero), so each of those two groups throws manufactured realities at us in the fight for our votes and money. If that sounds a bit reactionary, simply consider the fact that single images are now manipulated into video so that people can be made to say things and be things that are totally fabricated. The time is near where the line between truth and fake will be impossible to discern from mere observation. Tell me we're not already mostly there.

Quarantine might bankrupt a third of the working class? Eh, push it anyway, i don't need a paycheck. Bailout could fail the govt and destroy the dollar? Eh, I own real estate on every continent and hold every currency on the planet.

Remember, far left and far right do not exist on opposite ends of a line: they meet at the top of a circle, sharing the same interests and methods, differing only in name. When Nixon went to China in the '70's it was maybe the purest Communist state still remaining. Today it is the opposite: totalitarian capitalist. One extreme to the other, and it happened with no one noticing because all they had to do was step over the line at the top of the circle. They moved two inches, from one to the other.

How all this addresses your post, well, start from there and we'll keep it going if you like.

You are on to more than you might know.

May 30, 2020, 11:10 AM

I cant say this is all of it, but until about then you couldn't get a merger past congress. They hated them, especially the democrats. Gotta love them for that. I used to know his name, but somewhere in the time you propose, the last dem fire breather on antitrust retired from congress. Since then, congress has not seen a merger they didn't love. A lot of money has been changing hands as merger after merger has consolidated entire industries into monopolies and oligarchies.

We had the best and most stable banking system the world had seen, an independent one on every street corner.. Now there are about five who rule the system. We dont need to talk about what that has caused. There are, I think, five media companies. 5 people control all you see and hear, and its all entertainment no actual news. Those are just two examples.

When the politicians who were paid to cause this say the answer to "wealth inequity" is tax, how stupid do they think we are? Pretty stupid, because many of us line right up behind them. Tax structure didn't cause this mess, their own greed did when they created an economic oligarchy, and more taxes simply transfers more power to them, the people who took it from you in the first place. The path to equal opportunity is more individual freedom and equality, and an actual free market, one free of oligarchs, NOT transfer of more power and money to politicians who caused this.

So yes, you are on to something. In the 70's the tide turned from anti trust sentiment in congress to full on destruction of a free market in our most important industries. Insane amounts of money and power we consolidated into the hands of a few, with congressmen getting more than their share to approve it.

I said above that China had morphed into totalitarian capitalist (oligarchy) right in front of us. How different are we now, really?

And we play along by fighting over partisan politics, the proxy war this ruling class uses to get us to keep giving them money and power. Why else would one side love rioting in the streets? If its a tool they can use, fine by them. We should respond by demanding better of everyone - black and white leaders - but we instead follow their lead by fighting each other.

This depression is proof that job reports

May 29, 2020, 9:55 PM

Were bs. The job numbers were about as misleading as covid19 test data without sufficient testing.

The hard-core truth was that full-time good-paying jobs with benefits were not the kind of jobs being created under Trump’s watch. It was largely gig economy, piece-work and contracted jobs.

Since Trump took office the job quality index has actually dropped.

The U.S. Private Sector Job Quality Index (JQI) assesses job quality in the United States by measuring desirable higher-wage/higher-hour jobs versus lower-wage/lower-hour jobs. The JQI results also may serve as a proxy for the overall health of the U.S. jobs market, since the index enables month-by-month tracking of the direction and degree of change in high-to-low job composition.

I thought you were an economic genius, you should have been aware of this kind of inflammatory data.

May 30, 2020, 6:19 AM

My sincere hope is that this will lead to the changes we need - economic, environmental, healthcare.

But it has to start with the economic. And it has to be a free market solution, not socialism.

We need manufacturing back in the USA.

We need affordable college educations.

We need healthcare not tied to employment.

Do just those things and we have a chance at the others.

The clowns in Washington will never get it done. We need a clean sweep. All incumbents out. Concerned citizens in. And of course that can’t happen in our current system.

End Times. We’re in them.

The solutions are all that matter. I think you get closest to the truth in noting the entrenched system that makes turning the Titanic look like driving a 911 Turbo. The system is why a POTUS candidate’s solutions matter about as much as a fart in the wind. The system will nullify any meaningful change before it has a chance to get a foothold.

I couldn’t agree more. Who’s place is it to tell a man he is essential to go to work in a pandemic while sitting in his own safety in his bedroom. It’s just Jewish days in Egypt. Absolutely nothing has changed in thousands of years and they never will. All because the people who are not in power are told they have no power.

There was a small uprising in 1776 where a group was fed up with the powers at be and finally gained independence from their oppressors, but then that quickly went away when they started writing rules, regulations and other laws in place that benefited no one else but them.

A governing body will never truly be for the people and we are too dumb to prevent the same old recycling center from happening again and again! Why in the he’ll do we have retired federal judges who still have secretaries and his secretaries...secretaries that are still on pension And receiving free Benefits even after he has already retired?

A word to the “Career Politician”. Politics was never meant to be a “career”. It was supposed to be a position that allows someone (Who earns it) a brief amount of time to advocate for every person (not just people who he/she associates with). And when I say brief, I mean brief! That means I believe that every man/woman that sets foot in a political office, the time starts ticking when you sit down in the chair. When your time is up, you get out into the real world, find a job and pay into benefits just like everyone else .

As far as Bernie goes, he’s just like the rest of them. We put too much faith in believing one man is going to oil all the inner gears in a broken clock and make it work. Nothing will fix this country until the people (black, white, left, right) merge to be a Singular American to remove all powers, laws and Positions that have caused separation to begin with.

just think, the amount of money we dumped into this stimulus could have paid for new schools, high speed rails, new airports, a new electricity grid, and paid off every student loan debt in the country, all while putting people to work and stimulating the economy from the middle out. But instead we used it to prop up the markets for a few more months and send us down the inevitable path of a major economic depression. We have nobody to blame but ourselves for putting these people into power.

To be fair Balm, most of the people I know who absolutely despises these people we have in power right now, was the same people checking their bank accounts on their new smart phones to see if the stimulus check was in! May 30, 2020, 11:06 AM [ in reply to Re: face it, this powder keg has been waiting to blow ]

Your last sentence is where I think we need to focus. Ourselves. What is our mindset? What are our priorities. The priorities of our politics over the last several decades have clearly not been on building and protecting America for future generations. We drifted away from that conversation. We got mired into fights that wind up in completely shallow, meaningless platitudes.

Building takes long term commitments. Over generations. We need to get into the building mindset again. You are also right about the bailouts. Paying the hedge fund managers a fat retainer via this bailout was a horrible idea, especially since it came at the expense of our dollar and our debt load.

It showed the country where the priorities really are, and it is obvious they are not with the people who actually do things that create value. I call it the Trump Covid19 Depression, but you are absolutely right that it is our broken politics that has eroded our path and made this the new reality. Karma.

I honestly don't think I was race baiting with the post, at least that wasn't my intention. I'm focused on why people are rioting and the context of these violent protests. And yes, since Trump is our President, he is in the unfortunate position of being tagged with the labels, which yes, are intentionally used to bait us into a broader discussion of cause and effect.

If after all these protests you can't recognize that we have problems that run deeper than the wrongdoing of a psychopathic cop, than maybe it is you that is "adding" to the problem.

Let's just stop pretending that we are ok. The charade is near the end and we need good people to rise to the occasion. This is a big moment.
