Charleston King Street post riot report

Pardon my rambling on but here goes. Its 9:45am Sunday morning. There are few things I love more than downtown Charleston. I have a tour related company here and what took place last night brought tears to me eyes. So I went to King Street this morning at 6:45am to help store owners clean up. I cruised King from Columbus Street to Broad Street to see who needed help the most. South of Calhoun Street there was very little damage. The Apple store took a big hit (glass windows blown out and computers and other merchandise looted) and one other local antique store also took a hit (only glass windows blown out, no looting). Upper King is a different story. Most stores had windows broken and some had looting inside (this is from Hutson to Cannon Street). North of Spring was pretty much untouched. When I got there at 6:45am there were less than 20 people cleaning their stores. By 7:45am there were thousands helping with the clean up, mostly just local volunteers wanting to help out and not store employees. They were putting all trash, glass, etc. on the curb. By 8:15 virtually ALL trash in the street and sidewalks were gone. The City had the trash trucks running picking up all curbside trash that volunteers put there. It was AMAZING to see all helping out. There were all ages and all races. But most seemed to be C of C or under 30 year old girls. Made me proud. One car was going down King simply handing out water bottles to all volunteers.
A store called King Market at corner of King and Cannon was also hit. Strange fact is it is a black owned business.
Word is the people causing the problems were not protesters but Black Lives Matter people out of Atlanta (not confirmed yet) doing the rioting, breaking glass. Then some locals took their lead and did as they did.
A possible very sad note. I was talking to a guy who was downtown during the rioting, I was not. He said a former Clemson football great (I will not pass on the name) was in Hall's Chop House eating last night when some of these thugs broke in. Hall's is on King one block north of Hutson. When the rioters broke in breaking glass, throwing bricks and endangering lives this former Clemson player took issue and began to physically stand his ground and maybe even charged these thugs. The thugs in turn ganged up on him and began beating him with a club of some sort. He was over powered by the shear number of people ganging up on him. The bartender saw what was happening and pulled out a gun and fired it up in the air shooting several rounds to clear the thugs out. This also is NOT confirmed. That is why I am not releasing his name. I do know him but do not have his cell number to check up on him. But I do know that shots WERE fired from that area last night. I have the video.
Charleston will be OK. People are coming together just like they do after a hurricane and after the Emanuel AME shooting.

Columbia did a heck of a job today. Police controlled every situation, the curfew area was a ghost town at 6. They were out in force and did not budge. The moved the crowd, the crowd did not move them.
And the protestors were by and large actual protestors, not riotous

That's what you're referencing.
It's only a matter of time before somebody decides to act in self defense...canyon believe it hasn't happened already. A lot of bad people are going to die if and when the cork ever comes off that bottle. Black lives matter, antifa, etc...they'll be the first ones people go after.

Be careful putting wrong info out there. "Stand Your Ground" laws are only recognized by a few states. Most states people have a duty to retreat. Only when retreat is not an option and you feel that great bodily harm or death is imminent can you use deadly force to save yourself, family or even a complete stranger but you better make sure you know the law. SC is NOT a Open Carry state so if you are carrying you better have a CWP. Thats why right now is NO better time to not only get your CWP's but make sure your family is trained and proficient with a gun and above all else make sure they know the laws.

Oh dear, so sorry to hear this. Certainly dishonors the cause that needs to be the focus. My question, were the police present and were they making arrests of looters and those causing property damage? I have no tolerance for this kind of behavior. Thieves and civic protestors aren't related.

Police were greatly outnumbered by the protesters and rioters. At 10:45pm last night police began enforcing the 11pm curfew with tear gas and pepper spray.

A terrorist group from Afghanistan we’re doing these acts of violence. We would not be passively standing in riot gear. All we are doing is ensuring that this or worse happens again. And it’ll probably happen again bc there is always going to be an officer who goes too far and apparently our laws and processes aren’t fast enough. So these riots will happen again bc these antifa groups will make sure of it. You can’t keep allowing these mass protests, they don’t work anymore.

My fiance was down there this morning with you helping clean up. Unfortunately i couldn't make it, but good on you for helping.
I saw the video from halls last night and saw someone pull a gun coming out the front door after rioters threw trashcans at the window. I didn't see any rounds fired off or anyone getting beat up though. Perhaps the news vid only caught the aftermath of the beatdown. I believe i know who the former Clemson player is you're talking about. Crazy times. An on duty Chas city officer got jumped and beat up in front of hotel Bennett as well. That could've turned real bad, real quick but the officer jumped up and ran away instead. He showed a lot of restraint in that scenario.

The Jesse Jackson's, Al Sharpton's, and other so called black leaders need to step up. Most of the violent and looting scenario's belong to blacks according to the videos. The media will not mention that because of fear of being labelled a racist. Black leaders need to step up to the plate. You will also notice that nearly all of the volunteers cleaning up are whites. Label me a racist if you want but I am not. Did social work for many, many years and most of the people I helped were black. Until law enforcement starts acting, arresting, jailing, and fining, it is not going to stop.

There is already a history established of justice not working for black people. As they say, the definition of insanity is doing the same thing and expecting a different result. If peaceful protests have been ignored or criticized (e.g. Kapernick), what do you think is the logical alternative? Clearly, the riots have America’s attention, and this is now a problem that impacts all Americans rather than just black people.

I've got a better definition for you: the definition of immaturity: the inability to consider alternative solutions to a problem.
So Kaepernick protests peacefully, and people don't like it. Then another tragic police killing occurs--out of the 1100 deaths by cops every year. So your suggested alternative is to wreck what's left of the businesses in our country?
You represent an immature generation. I hope your immaturity doesn't represent any particular racial group or demographic, or the whole concept of equality is a pipe dream in all but the most legal sense.
You, my immature but hopefully willing to mature friend, are not equal in terms of importance to your community as those business owners on King St, the volunteers doing cleanup or the protestors marching peacefully.

You are right it doesn't concern me because I am concerned about all the other killings done by police and other people to each other that nothing is ever said about. Just like the black man that killed 2 elderly white people in a Delaware cemetary. Where is the out cry for that? Read the story and race is not mentioned one time because the shooter was black. Reverse the roles and see how the story reads. I'm sick and tired of the double standard so pardon me if I fail to care about someone else getting shot when other innocent people of different races don't get the same respect.

The better things have gotten for blacks over the last 60 years the more the ne'er do wells of that community have misbehaved and disrespected whites, other blacks, and themselves. Whitey can only do so much and the more Whitey helps the angrier blacks get . It's coming to an end.

That's a stupid statement. If you start coloring crime you need to separate it by percentage of the population. Then it starts to get clear. George Floyd is the very least of the AA population worries. Blacks are destroying themselves from within with drugs and crime. Black leaders do nothing to help the situation because they are too busy exploiting what they in truth don't want to go away. Same for liberals and socialists. Without black unrest they have nothing to talk about. I have no tolerance for things like the Floyd incident happening. It should be punished. But if you are a root cause type person you have to ask, why was he on the ground in the first place. Why are these guys getting arrested so much? Oh, right, they are being targeted.

So I’m not ignorant about it at all. Way to assume and jump to conclusions, Frances!
I find it to be a charming city, with lots of history and great restaurants. It’s a fun place to visit. But in my experience, both as a resident and a visitor,
many Charlestonians are overly proud of their city and fail to see it through an objective lens.
The fact that a Charleston resident responded so harshly to my post is a wonderful example of that.

The fact that you respond so harshly to any post critical of CBB is a wonderful example of that. It’s ok for you defend something you’re proud of, but it’s a fault if others do the same.
And there is no such thing as being too proud of your hometown. That’s maybe the most ridiculous thing I’ve ever heard you say, and that’s saying a lot. Maybe you’ll later tell us this was a joke. I sure hope so. It sounds like you tried to sound knowledgeable about Charleston, but got called on it, now you’re lashing out. It’s a common theme in your posting history.
Regarding your Charleston knowledge, try and be objective when you read this...
1) You didn’t know what counties the city of Charleston is in.
2) You recommended one of the most well known tourist traps in Charleston to someone, later saying you wouldn’t eat there, but you’d recommend it. You also linked Trip Advisor to support your recommendation, a link to tourist reviews.
3) And after being welcomed by Charlestonians for 5 years, you broad brushed the population of the city saying they blame others for their problems, then followed it up saying “they are too proud of their city”.
I think you’ve proved his point, and I didn’t need to jump very far to reach that conclusion.

First of all, I’m allowed to have whatever opinion I want about Charleston, orange overalls, Hyman’s, Coach Brownell, or anything else. I always explain my rationale. For whatever reason, it bothers you whenever my opinion doesn’t agree with yours.
I suggest you not take it so personally. The fact that you decided to bring my opinions about other (irrelevant) things into this conversation shows that you aren’t there yet.
Second, as I stated, I used to live in Charleston. So I have experience living there and interacting with others who lived there as well as visitors. I’ve also been a visitor to Charleston many times, before and since I lived there, and have seen it from that perspective as well.
The pride I have noticed some Charlestonians having about their city goes beyond a healthy pride in my opinion. It seems arrogant and prideful in that UNC Tarheel kind of way. Obviously everyone in Charleston isn’t that way. Most aren’t. There are many fine people there, many of whom are good friends of mine.

You made the post about what county Charleston was in, not me. In fact, you interrupted a conversation I was having with someone else about quarantine restrictions to point out my error, which was in fact, not an error. No one painted you in a corner. No one overreacted. No one drew a ridiculous conclusion. You went for the "gotcha", and missed. It was then we knew you were ignorant as to where the county lines ran, but now you know.
You made the post recommending Hyman's in response to a request for "locals favs, etc..." restaurant recommendations. Maybe you thought by "etc..." he meant "locals favs or a really touristy place"? Maybe you didn't know that Hyman's is widely known as a tourist trap. Is it good? Is it affordable? Maybe. And while that's up for debate, it's hardly a place that many locals frequent, or recommend. You went on to say you wouldn't eat there, you just recommend it. That is silly. At any rate, now you know.
I don't care if you like the orange overalls or not, it's your opinion. But there is no need to say fellow Clemson fans, who are giving their time to make your Clemson game day experience one like no other, look "stupid". That's poor manners. Maybe you didn't know that, now you do.
So next time someone from Charleston, takes the time to walk the streets and report back to us after a major event, just reply with "Thank you for sharing", and move on. But if you must use poor judgement, and post a criticism of the people of that city, be prepared for the lack of knowledge you previously displayed to be brought up again.

America, albeit a really effed up 2020 version of America.
But others are also allowed to point out when you're being arrogant and condescending in delivering said opinions. You started out by making fun of the lowcountry dialect, moved into attacking Charlestonians while tossing out a useless and incorrect generalization, and then you fire back when you get called out on it. If you want to have a discussion, that's fine, but you certainly didn't invite one. In fact you did the opposite and launched a hyperbolic yet obtuse attack.
I don't think you will find a native Charlestonian, or a native of any city who will admit their city is perfect. But yes, there are many, many problems that are caused solely by outside influences there. But you weren't addressing that. You responded to posts about the riots. So tell me, how many of the rioters, looters, agitators live in Charleston vs those that came in from outside areas? If you're like me and have no clue what that ratio is, then it's probably best to remain silent on that one as opposed to making fun of the good people of Charleston. Especially if you weren't there for the protests, riots and/or clean up, then your opinion means nothing.
And you lived 5 years in Charleston? That's nothing. What, were you there to work at MUSC then leave? 5 years in a city neither makes you an expert nor does it allow me to place any stock or confidence in your opinion.

Including that it's generally bad, disruptive, and destructive. But I didn't share those here, so I'm not sure how you would've known my opinions on the topic.
I don't know enough about the riots going on in Charleston to know specifics. I don't think anyone does, which is why I don't appreciate the assumption that the issue with Charleston's riots is thugs from Atlanta. Yep, blame the thugs from the big city for disrupting little 'ol Charleston. Then we don't have to consider the fact that Charleston might have any impurities.
The assumption that the rioting there must be from someone else wreaks of arrogance. Could it be due to outsiders? Of course. Do we have enough information at this point to know that for sure? No.

regarding Charleston and my knowledge thereof. In the future, when new topics are brought up, I will do my best to prove my worth to you before I share an opinion. That way, I can know with full confidence ahead of time that you feel my opinion is based on satisfactory knowledge.
Perhaps that will prevent a lot of this unproductive dialogue.

Channel 5 had a phone interview with a King Street wine bar owner. Said his customers had rocks and other things thrown at them. He estimates that due to 150,000 dollars in damages from the riots combined with money losses from the shutdown that his business is gone. Had no kind words for the mayor. They had interviews with other King Street owners who criticized the mayor's lack of response.

Trust me there is no shortage of cowardly mayors. Afraid a response might upset a voter or someone may get a boo boo from their arrest and sue. The gutlessness is palpable. I get a peaceful demonstration. Destroying where you live makes no sense to me. Its like prisoners in jail who set their mattress on fire but cant get out once it starts.

This makes me very sad as I love Chas. too. My mother grew up on 117 Rutledge and my father across the Ashley near Saint Andrews. I lived for a time on James Island. My great grandfather was sheriff of Chas. for close to 30 years, Sheriff Poulnot. This would not have happened on his watch I can guarantee you that, however that was a much different time.
