The best defense Trump's team has now is that AFTER events started to unfold, Sondland called and got told "No Quid Pro Quo" - which is an oddly specific thing to just announce apropos of nothing.
"Hey Gordon, thanks for calling. I"m in a totally great mood, and by the way, irrespective of nothing, no quid pro quo, please."

Trump into saying something that could be used against him. I find it funny that Sondland claims to have no ability to get the tapes when I think you and I would both put quite a bit of money on the fact that he was probably recording it on his end also.
But there's logic to your hypothesis, no doubt, and it could have absolutely played out the way you're thinking. The problem is we don't know. This is a massive partisan pizzzing match for power (high five to me for alliteration) and I'm guessing just about everything we're hearing from all sides is significantly fudged for effect.
I think impeachment is just about as serious as it gets, and I really don't like the feeling that it's seeming to become an alternative to an election win. They need to show some hard, fast evidence pronto, because nothing up to and including today has been concrete and definitive, much less dammning. A guy showing up in a real-world criminal trial as a witness for the prosecution, with only "presumptions" in his testimony and zero actual evidence would be laughed out of court, and yet there are many, in here already, high fiving the same from Sondland like its some sort of smoking gun.
