New Story: ACC football schedule winners and losers

Jan 23, 2014, 8:48 PM

ACC football schedule winners and losers

Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney said that Clemson's non-conference schedule - with games against Georgia and South Carolina - will allow the Tigers to compete for a spot in the new playoff. However, a look at the non-schedules of other ACC teams shows that not everybody is willing to play those kinds of opponents. Full Story »

Just a question, you do realize EVERY $EC team plays

Jan 23, 2014, 8:58 PM

a lame ###, non-conference cupcake the week before they play their rival? They have been doing it LONG before the morons in the ACC scheduling office realized and did the same thing? You do realize Alabama has played Georgia State two years in a ROW?!?! Who cares WHO we play the week before the USuC game, as long as it isn't someone who will make us break a serious sweat, why should we play NC State and they play Coastal Carolina?!?

Re: Just a question, you do realize EVERY $EC team plays

Hello, somebody have been paying attention. That slugfest with Boston College didn't help us much while Fsu was entering that game with everybody fresh and at full go while we was still trying to get out of the ice and hottubs. Yes the SEC has been doing this for a few years. Including Fsu before our game. I saw crying foul for years.

You realize that we control the out of conference schedule

Jan 23, 2014, 9:53 PM [ in reply to Just a question, you do realize EVERY $EC team plays ]

had we wanted to schedule a cream puff before South Carolina we could have done so years ago. It wasn't the ACCs fault.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

The problem was the ACC

Jan 24, 2014, 12:56 PM

For years they scheduled league games the week before the SCar game. They did this to Clemson, GT, and FSU.

From 2001 - 2011, there was only one season (2006) that Clemson did not have an ACC game the week before the SCar game.

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-15yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Contrast with SEC scheduling

Jan 24, 2014, 12:58 PM

Starting in 2006, SCar never had a league game scheduled the week before the Clemson game.

The ACC finally figured this out in 2012 and started giving its league members that played out-of-conference rivals an open week before the final game.

How the HEII did he grade FSU as an A+ and Clemson as an A. FSU us playing a OK State team that looses most of their defense and the starting QB. Florida couldn't beat their self out of a wet paper bag last year and ND will finish just about 500 this year. Whereas Clemson will be more than likely playing 2 top 10 out of conference teams. Lets just beat the 2 teams that made us look bad the last couple of years and the rest will work itself out. Go Tigers.

GaSt and SCSt balance the ledger....

FSU has UF. OkSt and ND.... likely all in top 25 at some point.... and either of them may be in the top 10 at some point.

Re: New Story: ACC football schedule winners and losers

Jan 23, 2014, 9:35 PM

Actually the coots played the orange crush for 18 years or so ending the year with Tenn, Florida, and Clemson

that was not smart Now it looks like both Clemson and Sc play cupcakes the week before.

I do think it is cool FSU and Clemson get buys before playing each other. There is no reason for 1 to have it and the other not when dealing with the 2 best teams in the ACC in a game that should determine the ACC champ

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

coots played the orange crush for years but somehow

Jan 23, 2014, 10:18 PM

found a way over the past decade or so to play a cupcake before Clemson. Things got interesting the past few years when Tenn and Florida found the big SUCK. weird how coots started winning games....

weird

Why is David harping on the penultimate game?

Jan 23, 2014, 10:05 PM

USuC has been doing it for years. The SEC as a whole has been doing it for much longer. You make the prep time to prepare for what is usually the make or break game of the season for your fanbase.

Also, Miami does not get a B just because they play Nebraska. That's a C grade OOC schedule at best. I'd love to see the SEC OOC schedule grades. All D's and F's like their athletes get in class. I kid of course. We all know that you get straight A's in AFAM. ;)

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I agree. We are not going to schedule 3 tough non conference

Jan 23, 2014, 10:39 PM

opponents. Makes no sense to risk yet another loss on the schedule. The undefeated or one loss teams from the big 5 conferences will make this little 4 team playoff no matter what their nonconference schedule. Watch and see.Now if the playoff invited 32 teams or 64 teams I could see how nonconference schedules would make a difference. Tired of the moaning about two cupcakes on the schedule. We have two SEC teams on the schedule. Who else is doing that? and we need to find a way to beat one of them.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: I agree. We are not going to schedule 3 tough non conference

Jan 24, 2014, 10:38 AM

I think selling a ND, UGa, or USC ticket for $70 instead of $35 for a SCSt or GaSt (with the leftovers going for <$16) will pay for itself..... likely to sell more season tickets as well.
I think to get to the playoff with a loss to FSU is possible if we have 3 other wins against top 15 teams like USC, UGa, Auburn, or others. i would like to see home and home with Tennessee or a game in Charlotte with East Carolina....

Re: Why is David harping on the penultimate game?

Jan 24, 2014, 1:05 PM [ in reply to Why is David harping on the penultimate game? ]

We usually just say "next to last". Don't want to confuse the coots...you're talking multiple syllables here...much to conjugate...

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

UNC gets a B. I guess they are still being graded on a curve

Jan 23, 2014, 10:27 PM

just like the athletes in Class. Maybe UNC was allowed to grade itself. A 'B' with that weak OOC schedule is hard to believe.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Seriously, that OOC schedule looks like a "C" at best

Jan 24, 2014, 10:48 AM

to me. Just because it's ND doesn't mean they don't suck. ND is not scaring anyone again this year.

At least FSU grew some balls.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

The C for GT is foolish. Ga. Southern and Wofford are

Jan 23, 2014, 11:48 PM

tougher than at least 2 of the non-cons Miami is playing. Miami should get the C.

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

NCSU always plays a joke of a schedule. The fact that they

Jan 24, 2014, 7:27 AM

could even go to a bowl win two conference wins is ridiculous.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I love the hall pass comment

Jan 24, 2014, 7:29 AM

Let's remember, UF has not left the state of FL for a non-conference game since 1992. Rarely play a bowl outside of the state. That has to be kind of a boring existence.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Thanks for the stat about UF not leaving FL for a game since

Jan 24, 2014, 10:51 AM

92. That's absurd.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: New Story: ACC football schedule winners and losers

Jan 24, 2014, 8:17 AM

"Have two teams ever played in a bowl game, then opened the season against each other as conference foes?"

Miami & Florida State:
The Orange Bowl (played in then Pro Player Stadium) following the 2003 Season saw Miami win 16-14.
The Following Season Florida State Opened up at Miami (in the Stadium known as the Orange Bowl) on Labor Day with a 16-10 OT Loss

Interestingly, It is Miami again that is involved in a similar scenario this year with Louisville, also opening up on Labor Day.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Not so sure about Grade of A for Tigers. More B+ imo.

Jan 24, 2014, 8:49 AM

Re: Not so sure about Grade of A for Tigers. More B+ imo.

Jan 24, 2014, 9:17 AM

I agree. And trying to count Scar in this article doesn't amount to much imo. We play them every year regardless. Same goes for FSU and GT with regards to their in-state rivalry against a non-conference team.

Also - It's ridiculous for a team to be judged by their "tough" non-conference play when their conference play might be just as tough, if not tougher. If I'm not mistaken, 7 ACC teams have to play FSU this year - including NC St and WF. 8 ACC teams are playing Clemson this year - including NC St and WF. #### ... WF has to play Duke.

If you want to judge a non-conference schedule, I say give some praise to Georgia State. They have to play Clemson and Alabama.

Jan 24, 2014, 9:32 AM

I'm already salivating at the chance to see Mr Alexander unleashed on defense. I'm licking my chops looking at USC. In my 42 years have I never felt such pain losing a record 5 in a row to the dirty yard birds. I'm ready for kickoff, and a victory over SCAR. I just hope & pray the coaching carousel doesn't grab up Chad. Should be another great year! Dabo has us on the thresh hold. Just time to come busting through the door! Go Tigers!!

Jan 24, 2014, 10:56 AM

To be fair not long ago we had a 4 and 0 run and something like 7 of 9 .... plus that 70+ point beatdown in Columbia...
We had gotten a little arrogant and were playing soft until recently, we are now playing well enough to beat SEC teams but must still play our best game to beat a top 15 team.
FSU in contrast had a bad game against Auburn and still managed to win.... I think our odds of beating USC and UGa
are better than winning at FSU. If we play our best game and get some breaks we could win. If we play like we did this year it will be another beat down.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

David, I'm no sotsure you recognize the significance of

Jan 24, 2014, 9:35 AM

playing Georgia State the week before South Carolina.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: New Story: ACC football schedule winners and losers

Jan 24, 2014, 10:28 AM

WF needs 4 out of conference Ws to get to a bowl game! New coaching staff. they mihgt go 2 - 2 out of conference even with that schedule.
NCState also needs wins after 0 - 8 conference record last year.
I would grade the schedules on a curve. FSU, Clemson, Miami, should schedule stronger teams than the rest. As others recruit better they should schedule better. other that the 3 above i expect UNC and VaTech may be the only teams that could compete with top 20 teams.

Arkansas State, Georgia Southern will likely surprise some teams from the former BCS teams this year.
I expect SCState to put a better team on the field than GaState!

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I'd like to see us play one of the better Big XII teams

Jan 24, 2014, 10:53 AM

I'm growing a little tired of just playing the SEC out of conference. Just one home and home with Oklahoma, Texas or Oklahoma State would be nice. Wish we could get that series with OSU back.

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: I'd like to see us play one of the better Big XII teams

Jan 24, 2014, 10:58 AM

I wish we would go to 9 game conference schedule and only count division games to get to the title game......

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

You say SEC gets a hall pass...

Jan 24, 2014, 11:32 AM

Clemson plays UGA two years in a row and that's a "signature game".

Carolina plays Georgia EVERY year. Add aTm, Missouri, @Auburn, @FL, and @Clemson....you call that a "hall pass"?!?!

Tenn. won a total of 5 games in 2013, including the likes of Austin Peay(???),Western Kentucky Hilltoppers(???),South Alabama Jaguars(?),SC Coots, and Kentucky. When you use them as an example of the tough schedule that the E"SEC"PN has to "battle" through, it kind of defeats the argument. They did lose to a huge dominating hunter/killer (SEC) Florida Gator team this year.Since I mentioned Kentucky as a Tenn. win, they won exactly TWO games this year. Nice of you though to legitimize Clemson on your list. With ESPN,any of the members of the SEC get an E"SEC"N hall pass AND escort.

it must have YOU in a frenzy!
you don't know where you are obviously coot...
also, five is all that your vocabulary consists of.
did you lose a hand or something? because most folks can count higher on two hands...we Clemson fans have to when talking about our streaks against the lameclucks :)

and if they could beat them all in one season, maybe they could play for a championship or could've gone to a BCS game...
BUT...

Go Tigers!
