Wrong Hat for your interview

We are hiring some temporary assembly help in our shop. Our first candidate came in yesterday and spoke with my VP and Shop Manager for a while before coming to talk to me. I told my Shop Manager not to bother me with anyone if he didn't want them so I was glad this guy had made the first cut. However, he walks in wearing an Alabama hat :(, looked at my hat and shirt and just slumped and muttered, "Oh man, really"? I just smiled, pointed to two degrees on my wall and said, "Yep".
He recovered nicely though and we talked about the game for a bit. He seemed like a good kid and may very well end up hiring him. Just thought it was a funny way to start an interview.

I realize times are different. And I consider myself a more casual person, but wearing a ball cap to an interview is not acceptable. Not for any job. If you don't have enough respect to spend a few extra minutes for an interview my perception is that you sure won't invest effort in your job. Unfortunately, perception is reality.
