Williams fumble

Sep 4, 2016, 2:54 PM

Why was his forward progress not marked? He didn't fumble until he was knocked back a yard or two it looked like to me.

guy hit the ball while he was out of bounds! that SHOULD nullify the play.. our ball!!

It was the right call

Sep 4, 2016, 3:06 PM

A player can knock the ball loose even if he is out of bounds.

The play is only dead if an out of bounds player touches a LOOSE ball.

It was NOT the right call

Sep 4, 2016, 3:22 PM

Sorry, but I think you're wrong about that. A player who has established position out of bounds may NOT affect play on the field. It was a terrible call. #49 for Auburn was clearly out of bounds when he hit the ball and knocked it loose. The penalty is Unsportsmanlike Conduct.

That's exactly what the announcers said....if #49 was the one to strip the ball it should have been our ball...

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

49 was the one who stripped it

Sep 4, 2016, 4:13 PM

He was out out bounds and even landed out of bounds with his heel after stripping it ( never made it back in until the ball hit the ground).

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

CLEARLy out of bounds: should have been our ball!***

Not sure I understand the question, but his forward progress

Sep 4, 2016, 2:59 PM

was irrelevant since he fumbled and Auburn recovered?

refs just do not have the guts to call things correctly any more.. see Ellington in the Orange Bowl against WVU

Re: Williams fumble

Unfortunately, the concept of "forward progress" has been lost forever. I scream about it every ballgame I watch. I guess it's more exciting to see a player stopped, dragged backward while 6 defenders try to take the ball away, and then call it a fumble. But, if there is no fumble, then the ball is returned to the point at which forward progress was stopped. How can it be both ways? It's what a lot of the game has degraded into.

Just like "moving the scrum" which was always a 15 yard penalty for "assisting the runner." No more.

Re: Williams fumble

They have to whistle the play dead when the player is wrapped up for forward progress to be relevant to the fumble. The didn't so the play was still live when the ball came out. It was a close call for a number of reasons, but I don't think it was too bad a call overall. In general I think more calls went our way than Auburn's, so I ain't complaining.

I still feel like they put too much credence on the call on the field. You get one look (if they actually see it) at speed versus multiple angles in slow motion.

The one that knocked the ball loose was OOB and remained OOB during that fumble

Yep. 49 stripped ball, and once ball loose with his hand still momentarily on it and not reesrablished in bounds...ball is OOB.
