Why you shouldn’t care about preseason rankings!
Jul 9, 2018, 7:34 PM
|
|
I used the AP Top 25 rankings from the 2014-2017 football seasons, and discovered the following:
1) Only 30% of teams ranked in the preason Top 25 finished higher in the final poll. 2) 39% of preseason Top 25 teams finished unranked. 3) 20% of preseason Top 10 teams finished unranked. 4) 28% of preseason Top 25 teams finished lower in the final poll.
The conclusion is most teams will finish lower than they are ranked in the preseason. About 10 teas won’t even be ranked. Those polls mean nothing.
One fact does rise above the rest. Only one team in the last four seasons has finished higher than their preseason rank: Clemson.

I think the number% on 2 and 4 may be reversed. 4 should be higher than 2.

I'm no math or statistics major, but something seems off about these numbers.
If 30% of preseason top 25 teams finished higher and 28% preseason top 25 teams finished lower, then that leaves 42% of preseason top 25 teams that finish exactly where they started.
Seriously?!?! 42% finish exactly where they started? That seems very high IMO.
Like I said, I'm no math or statistics major, maybe some tnetter much smarter than I can help me out here.

Preseason rankings only matter to

The SEC...it establishes the argument for the 'brutality' of their schedule and justifies their presence in 50-60% of the Top 10. The SEC has a PR 'handler' second to none.

So, is that why USC always wins their conference?

In all fairness, the SEC gets over hyped for a couple of reasons. I think ESPN financial gain is one reason. I think emphasis SEC schools put on football is the other reason. With the exception of Candy, they have huge fan bases and huge stadiums. We are the only ACC school with facilities on par with top tier SEC schools. FSU and VT are decent, but after that ACC facilities are very small. Facilities like the dumpster in Cooterville are kinky, but still big.
