Why not automatic for conference champs?

Works in every other sports league/ affiliate. Remember when the 9 and 7 giants beat the 16-0 patriots? This is like telling the blue jays, we know you won the east but the Yankees looked better so you are out. Conference champs and 3 at large. Truly lets the championship be won on the field!!

Because the Big 12 has fewer teams and no conference championship game, so a much easier path to the playoffs.

Champion games are how crappy teams would occasionally get in

An 8-4 team can beat an 11-1 team in a 1 game situation. Over the course of the season the cream rises. Say what you will about the Big XIIs lack of a title game but with their round robin format you will never get a random turd champion.

Because total W-L matters for national playoff, but conference record is used to determine who plays for conf.
OSU and PSU are tied in B1G with identical 1-loss records and PSU hold tiebreaker.
Nationally, the Pitt loss matters so OSU is ahead at 11-1 vs 10-2.

Occasionally turd 3 and 4 loss teams win conferences

and I have absolutely no desire to see them in the playoff.
If you put them in you better have a couple wild card spots to put the more deserving teams in as well.

would you watch FL play COL and VT play PSU in the semis? I know it's an exaggeration, but the overall resume has to count for something

How terrible comparison when ifyou read what I said move to an 8 team playoff so all conferences have reps. Just like the nfl has all divisions reps irregardless of division winner record

I think this is being chirped by a bunch of people with OCD who see "perfect order" with this plan. We can shoot holes in this plan rather quickly. They will not be happy with the results when a 7-4 Iowa or Georgia Tech wins their conference and shows up ill equipped to perform on the big stage. Throw in a Central Michigan or Houston because their record was so good playing inferior competition. Chaos will never leave these OCDers alone.

A 7-4 P5 champion would be the 8 Seed and get smoked in the first round by the top seed preferably on the road in a hostile environment. I don't really see this is as an issue. The less influence a random group of people have in selecting the national champion off some vague eye test the better in my eyes, but I guess that's just me.

Assuming Clemson\Washington\AL win
1. AL - SEC Champ 2. Clemson - ACC CHamp 3. Washington - PAC12 Champ 4. Wisc\Penn State - Big10 Champ 5. OU\OSU - Big 12 Champ 6. tOSU - At Large 7. Michigan - At Large 8. Western Michigan - Best G5
Would anyone really be all that upset with line up?

^^^I think Bama fans would be upset with that lineup since Western Michigan would clobber them.

In those other leagues you mention

Teams are ranked on ALL W-L and they are considered equal. In CFB conferences only take conference W-L.
So we have a 10-2 Michigan and 10-2 PSU and Michigan beat PSU down.
But B1G sees a 8-1 PSU and a 7-2 Michigan because it ignores 1/4 of both teams games. Games in which Michigan was 3-0 and PSU lost to Pitt.
This doesn't happen in NFL, NBA, MLB, etc.
