Why is ray ray going pro ?

Posted: Jan 15, 2018 9:44 AM

What did he really do worthwhile the whole season other than running that punt back at NC State? I'm not bashing by any means but he def needs to come back and work on those ball catching skills. won't get drafted imo. Thoughts ?

Many people ain’t aware that his catch percentage is about the same as that of Hunter Renfrow this year.

Not saying he shouldn’t come back, but many people don’t give him enough credit that he deserves.

The game is on the line and the game clock has 3 seconds left then game over. The only two receivers you have are Ray Ray and Hunter, both of them will be in tight double coverage, who are you going to throw the ball to???

I'm going to Hunter Renfrow, final answer!!!

if 2 guys are doubled ima throw it somewhere else***

He had some good plays this season, what was you watching a year? You don't remember his Louisville game? Or the Miami game where he had 6 catches and 100 yards?? His Problem is not pass catching, it's holding on to the ball... I thought he was coming back myself but that lifestyle fits Ray.. he's all about the cameras and being flashy

Just know that I'm friends a lot players former and current. Oh yea, Ray will tell you hisself he's a flashy type guy.. nothing wrong with it at all. We have a even more flashier guy on the way!

I think he could've easily used another year to improve his draft stock. My opinion is not due to my orange colored glasses either. Ray-Ray has the skill set to make it at the next level, but I don't think he's sharp enough yet. My guess is he’ll go late in the 5th to 6th round, if drafted at all (similar scenario with Artavis Scott).

Another year of strength and conditioning could've worked to his advantage. Ray-Ray was never our primary possession receiver or go to wideout. He was also considered a slight liability in the return game due to fumbles/drops.

He'll perform well at the combine & probably get a few scouts attention. I wish him the best of luck, hope he gets drafted and high as possible.

Coming back would not improve his draft stock.

Still too raw to make impact in pros with going pro this year. Imo

Re: Why is ray ray going pro ?

I think that Ray Ray has the skill to be great receiver, but a sure handed Renfrow he's not. But the NFL do likes speed, that may help him. But like most, I believe someone gave him a lot of wrong advise OR, in his own mine he believes that he is better than he actually is. I'm sure his family and friends believes that also!!!

But most know my personal opinion is that getting their degree is #1. That will end up being in the long run, a much better choice than leaving early for the NFL. Leaving early is giving the NFL to much control of what their lives will be over the next 1 to 6 years. And I wouldn't give a business of any kind that will never give a crap about anybody, that much control over others lives. Only 1.5% of kids leaving college for the NFL make it to their 1st contract. Get that degree before you give the NFL a shot, bc that is all it is, it's 1.5% shot of making it.

Ray Ray has good hands. He has made some clutch grabs this season. What football did you watch if you think he only had that PR against state??? He needs to not fumble as much but he has the speed and skill to be a really good slot guy in the league. He is a mismatch nightmare for LBs.

Why just support the young man in a decision he felt was best for him? Would his draft grade gotten better next yr? IMO probably not. McCloud is a good kid and has the ability to play both sides of the ball in NFL. These kids see and read what ppl say on forums and social media. He's part of the Clemson family and him being successful in the NFL will pay off for Clemson down the road with other recruits. We have Jeff Scott and other WRs waiting their turns. Let's just be supportive of both McCloud and Cain.

Agreed! They can always come back and get their degree as well.

Re: Why is ray ray going pro ?

Posted: Jan 15, 2018 11:55 AM

"gotten better next year"...possibly...possibly not. Depends on who the QB is...and how much throw-vs-runs the team plays with next year. This year was his better year, I have to admit. My concern is are you ready only 1 yr removed from being the guy that dropped the ball 1 foot before crossing the end zone line and muffing punts left and right? That's more my concern. He muffed twice in the Miami game, though I don't fully count one as his fault, since our guy ran into his legs and tripped him up.

Because he wouldn’t improve his stock if Kelly Bryant is our an next year.

Re: Why is ray ray going pro ?

Now that there is the most interesting question of them all on whether or not to go or stay. If you are a Receiver at Clemson that maybe needs to come back and improve on all around skills, if I come back, I would want to know who will be the QB throwing me the ball. I would want a better answer than, it could be KB, or HJ, or it could be TL, or CB... The HC is telling me the best QB that gives us the best chance to win (LMAO) but I'm gone gone gone!!! Seriously though, my vote will always be to get your degree, a freak injury can't take your degree from you, but it can and will ###### your FB career right out your hands with nothing but what ever you can find to support your self. But Clemson degree in about anything can aid you in getting a dang good paying job!!!!!!

My guess is he felt his skill set is what it is and another year in CFB wasn't going to increase his draft stock. Maybe a mistake, maybe not; time will tell and hopefully it works out as he planned.

Ray Ray was consistent this year & it’s definitely not his fault he didn’t get as many targets as we might have liked. But, the kid was clutch in a lot of situations & didn’t have the drops that some others had.

I don't think that you can find a real Tiger fan that wouldn't wish him the very best at the next level. I believe that we all will pray that he is successful, he is one of us when he leaves, so why wouldn't we want the best for him!!!

Re: Why is ray ray going pro ?

IMO, Ray Ray's strength is speed and his weakness is height. He isn't getting any taller and he will definitely get slower. He needs to go while he is still fast. If he has a future in the NFL it will be a short one. Coming back to Clemson would be using up one of his earning years.

Re: Why is ray ray going pro ?

But he would gain a life time degree if he stayed. And if his career will be short as you say, he will surly need that degree sooner than later....

If he thinks the offense will be the same next year

Posted: Jan 15, 2018 11:11 AM

The offense this year was more ground oriented, even with Cain leaving there are still a lot of very good receivers so there's really no chance for him to put up any "eye-popping" numbers next season.

His stats next year are likely to be similar to this year and thus his draft stock next year was likely to be similar to what it was this year. So in his opinion there wasn't a reason to stay.

Re: If he thinks the offense will be the same next year

Posted: Jan 15, 2018 11:20 AM

He's defiantly improved each year, might of had a breakout season if he'd had a different QB to utilize his skill set. Does anyone know if he's got his degree or is close to it? If he's graduated or about to than there's no point in him staying. He wont improve his stock enough for it to matter, so might as well get started on his pro career.

1. Some guys just aren't cut out for school, and it takes a lot of these athletes time that could be spent working on their craft

2. Even practice squad paychecks are more than most of us make, and probably more than most of these guys have ever seen.

3. He's probably hitting close to his ceiling at Clemson. He doesn't have the frame to add size and strength, and he doesn't have a ton more room to develop his pass catching abilities.

4. He has guys nipping at his heels for playing time. If he came back, he's looking at splitting snaps with Amari Rodgers.

People need to stop trying to dumb down these decisions so

much. Where he's going to get drafted this year is only 1 factor among many. Sure it's a pretty big one, but you also have to consider a ton of other factors that play into the decisions of these players:

Are they likely to get drafted any higher next year? This is much more complicated than many people try to make it when they just assume that a player will always get drafted higher if they come back for another year. If a player is a 3rd rounder this year they will be a 1st rounder next year, right? If only that were true. You have to look way beyond that. Is the player actually likely to improve? What's holding him back? Is it physical limitations (height, speed) that can't be changed significantly (or at all), or does he just need more time to learn the game? Maybe he's only started for a year and is kind of raw or maybe there isn't a lot of film on him yet for the NFL scouts to go on. Even beyond that you have things like how deep is the draft class at his position vs next year.

Have they already graduated early or do they even care about a degree? It's easy to say that all of these guys should get their degrees before they leave, but some of them either a) don't have the wisdom to really see that at age 20, or b) don't care at all. Many professions don't require college degrees - including professional football. It's also not impossible to go back and finish the last year of a degree elsewhere several years later.

Do they need the money right now? Some of these guys are really poor, some have families living in really poor conditions, some of them have young children already or pregnant wives/girlfriends, etc, and they need to start earning a paycheck. They can't do that in college.

Are they just ready to move on with their lives?

As an example here, Artavis Scott perfectly fits the mold of a guy that isn't likely to get drafted highly (if at all), but also isn't likely to fare any better by waiting a year. Scott had already started for 3 years so there was clearly plenty of film on him and he had learned about all he could learn and accomplished all he could accomplish at Clemson. His limitations were largely physical. He was tough and strong, but short and not particularly fast. No matter how long he stayed at Clemson he wasn't going to magically become a sought-after downfield threat or a big, physical, jump ball receiver. He did most of his damage in college on screen passes and jet sweeps - things you don't see a lot of in the NFL. He also already had his degree.

Great post TigersAndCubs. None of these big life decisions like whether to go pro early or return to a place like Clemson are suited for analysis in 140 characters. Leaving Columbia early? Sure. IMO, couch-bound fans and chat board experts should find a way to support these guys in the decisions they make, even if that’s to say nothing. Unless these players are asking for feedback, it’s not our decision. Guys like Ray Ray gave plenty to Clemson. Sometimes ulcers and heart attacks on the punt receiving duties but ultimately these are college kids. Fixing my anxiety around Clemson football is not their responsibility. They have earned the ability to make decisions about their own careers. Most of us were hungover at Harcombe when these players were putting in work in the weight room. Plus, there have been several players who have gone on to achieve levels of success in the pros way beyond what many project, on TNet, ESPN and otherwise. I don’t care if folks disagree with these guys’ decisions or are hopeful they come back because it’s self-serving as fans. But don’t bash these guys. They deserve better. Go Tigers.

Regardless of whether he is drafted or not, he will be in someone's camp next year. Then it is up to him to perform.
