It makes me proud to have Trustees who love Clemson University enough to do whatever is necessary to enable her to be all she can be without giving in the "whims" of special interests groups, however noble they may be. Surely the future is bright for this great institution. I'm grateful to be a small part of her heritage (Class of 77). Go Tigers!

won't be happy.

Expect social media to really catch on fire. Then look for a flurry of blog posts and news pieces and magazine articles, etc. The tool most activists use is the Internet. And the best way to get attention is to have your point of view show up in search engine results. And the best way to be on top is to make sure posts are frequent and current. That gets you the best position on search results.

Then its time to post the most and get our opinions out there to stop outsiders from winning that battle....Outsiders have no position in Clemson or anywhere for that matter as the issue is not theirs and they only seek to gain notoriety or benefit somehow monetarily. That sort of BS doesn't sit well with me...If it affects you that is one thing but if you have no skin in the game then buttout...

on the left have not said one peep recently about Chik-fil-A or Christianity and Clemson football. They are part of an organized progressive network across the country that are supported by big money. People like George Soros. They are bullies. But when you do like Clemson has done twice now and put out a very affirmative statement that says we are NOT changing you shut them down! When you give them an emphatic NO they go away. When you stand up to bullies they go away.

Where most people screw up is they don't give an emphatic NO. They humor these folks and say we're "open to having a conversation", but once you do that the game is over. You've already lost. The only way to deal with bullies is to punch them in the nose. You have to give them an emphatic NO and in the words of Barney Fife, "nip it in the bud".

Clemson, twice, and Chik-fil-A are providing the blueprint to stop these leftist organizations. But it's nothing new. It's simple and old fashioned. You punch a bully in the nose and say NO.

was his Constitutional right. I love tools like you and the left in general that thinks you are the morality police. Same with the guy at Mozilla. Believing in traditional marriage is not hateful. I have a lot of gay friends, but I support traditional marriage. Most gay people agree we have the right to our own opinions. It's non-gay progressives wanting to assault all things traditional that stir these pots. Less than 5% of the population is gay, more like 3%. Abortion effects less than 20% of the population. And a lot of those women are pro-life. Every one of these social issues is a wedge used by the left to create fear and divide people to win national elections because the left can win on the real issues most people care about. That is pure FACT!! And you know it!! The progressive left is nothing but cowards that embrace hypocrisy and double standards to push an agenda few people want and you only get away with it because the liberal mainstream media lies & manipulates. If we had a more honest and less biased media progressives wouldn't have a chance. Progressives are closeted communists thirsty for power and willing to lie and cheat and use any group possible to get what they want. If you couldn't lie, manipulate, and buy votes you wouldn't get anywhere.

And by the way, if you think e changed is views you truly are a fool. He did exactly like you lefties. He told people what they wanted to hear. But they did win, the public spoke up and they had the best day and week in company history So keep deluding yourself that the left won.

two parts: The (1) Old & the (2) New Testament. The Old Testament is foundational and historical. Then God sent Jesus to be the messiah. During his time on earth Jesus taught a new covenant for mankind to live by, which became the New Testament. Jesus was a Jew who came, as promised by God, as the messiah. Since Jews use the Old Testament and the Torah as their guides, Christians study the Old Testament for historical purposes. But Christians follow and live by the teachings of Jesus, which is the New Testament. The 12 disciples were the first Christians and they spread his teachings. Jews don't worship Jesus because they saw him as a prophet. They do not accept him as the messiah. They are still waiting on God to send the messiah as promised in the Old Testament.

The univerisity can do what it wants. But your response is a perfect illustration of the problem...you have zero ability to empathize with your fellow humans. I bet you call yourself a "good Clemson man," but yet here you are, saying the feelings or opinions of other equally good Clemson men don't matter.

Oh...and congrats on the most inane George Soros allusion yet.

Wow! Whole lot wrong in that post. ..........

[2]
Posted: Feb 12, 2015 9:15 PM

1. The university can NOT do what it wants. Many things, like renaming a building, take a vote from the BOT then a vote from the SC legislature.

2. You don't know a d@mn thing about me nor my life. I'm far more empathetic than most, but slavery, racism, and other wrongs of the past do not harm anyone alive today. Changing the names of buildings and sweeping the past under the rug will not help anyone today. In fact, it can cause more arm because it's dangerous to forget the past. Confronting the past is how you improve the future. Not by avoidance! Anyone emotionally harmed by the name of a building should eat a bullet because they are emotional cripples and a waste of oxygen.

Here are some facts: During the 50's there was infinitely more racism, plus segregation, but there was also infinitely less drugs, violence, crime, etc. in the black community. Black employment and emphasis on education was higher then as well. Blacks were financially more stable then too and more upwardly mobile. Yet the liberal talking points today are that racism causes all these problems in the black community. Hogwash. The facts & statistics shatter that meme. Racism was rampant back then compared to the lack of racism today. So what's the difference then compared to now? The destruction of the black family! And progressive policies since the 60's have a huge hand in that. If the left had empathy for the black community they would kill all the failed policies that are dividing & bankrupting us today. But that won't happen because that's how Democrats buy the black & hispanic vote.

3. You and I both know Soros gives tons of money to countless far left organizations and he helped create groups like ACORN & Media Matters, among others.

Outside agitators? Like Tiger fans who didn't go to Clemson?

[2]
Posted: Feb 11, 2015 5:55 PM

So should we limit this fan site to people who actually attended Clemson University? I mean, what business do those outsiders have caring about MY football team?

I'll admit that's a little apples and oranges, but assuming this movement is completely the work of people not associated with the school is preposterous. There are plenty of current Clemson students and alumni, as well as the current faculty, who support changing the name.

First of all, it is my understanding that Tillman Hall was called simply Old Main until the 1940s. What was the reason that the building's name was changed then? Was it an overtly racist move, like the move in the 1950s to display the Confederate battle flag over the statehouse?

Second, if the building was still called Old Main and the Board was looking to change it, would Ben Tillman's be a name to consider? I have yet to hear any supporters of retaining the name explain what makes Tillman worthy of such an honor.

The statement from the Board is well written, and I'm not going to stop supporting Clemson if they don't drop Tillman's name from the most iconic building on campus. It would be a slippery slope if they did. (I'm not even sure we could keep the name Clemson. I don't know what TGC's feelings on the subject were. Tillman's words and deeds, on the other hand, were more than just a reflection of the times.) But don't assume everyone who is in favor of changing the name is an outsider or is just wanting to stir up trouble. Some of them care about Clemson as much as you do, and they have as much right to express their opinions.

Progressives are closeted communists who can't see reality, which is, capitalism & democracy are messy, but far better than all other systems combined. People in communist countries actually want to be like America. Socialism eventually fails, while communism should be a non-starter for anyone with two brain cells.

Everyone want's to be PC, but Freedom of speech allows us to call things what they are. One can call them "progressives" so as not to "offend," but a Progressive is a Socialist is a Communist is a Marxist. Progressive just makes the masses a useful tool by making them think they are "All In" for them. These systems have not succeeded anywhere as they all fail when they run out of other people's money and the people's freedom.

I am so glad that our BOT have the courage to stand by CLEMSON and not change her. I've loved her for many years, and I like what she is. Do not change our CLEMSON!

Every great institution is built by imperfect craftsmen. Stone by stone they add to the foundation so that over many, many generations, we get a variety of stones. And so it is with Clemson. Some of our historical stones are rough and even unpleasant to look at. But they are ours and denying them as part of our history does not make them any less so. For that reason, we will not change the name of our historical buildings. Part of knowledge is to know and understand history so you learn from it. Clemson is a strong, diverse university in which all of us can be proud. That is today and tomorrow's reality and that is where all our energy is focused.

Glad they kept it the same.
During my freshman orentation in
1963 in the Tillman Hall auditorium, the
speaker said to take a look at the person on your right and the left because he wouldn't be there in four years.
Somehow I made it in '67.
That and the climb to AF ROTC on
the 3rd. Floor is what I remember about
Tillman Hall.

Clemson changes Tillman Hall's name right after Washington DC removes the Washington part of their name (George Washington held slaves after all). Done.

If we did everything the faculty senate voted to do we would be changing isht every month and changing it back and then changing again. The greatest line in that letter was that we can forget our past and the bad things that have happened along the way because its up to us to learn and move forward. Erasing it from the deed doesn't erase it from ever happening.

We would have to change about 75% of our history if we changed things based off of men and their past mistakes. Are these people kidding?

Why do those who want progressive change always have to simplify the issue to "rights" and especially rights that are not granted explicitly but require adopting progressive ideology to believe?

There is no push to STOP organizing. And my posts are simply pointing to the fact that those who are loosing their fight so far are probably still going to pursue it.

Of every building in America to MLK jr and Abe Lincolns emancipation hall since they're the only God for saken people in history that' weren't racist. I'm white. Im obviously racist and so is 80% of this board so we all hate minorities and support oppression of non-whites right?

I mean really that's what these people want. And then targeting me and my ancestry is the only way to make things "right" even though I didn't choose who I am just like no one else chose. I don't opress you and no one opresses you today so please. Get over it with this sissy sensitivity. This is a fight for Ben Tillman to take up with a higher authority and the people he mistreated. Anyone directly affected by his actions are long removed from this world so don't act like your life is directly inhibited by a name on an organized pile of wood and brick. Get over it

That is how I see it. In Ben Tillman's time racism was excepted all over the south we know. Trying to try him in public opinion in a time where all of us try to fight against racism is just wrong. Even if we were to dig his bones up and put him on trial for being a racist, for what would it serve, the man still can't represent himself and his views during what was known in his time of wide spread acceptance of racism. Well we could tie all his bones back together and hang him for what we believe is wrong 100 + years later....

Chick-fil-A

[3]
Posted: Feb 11, 2015 11:07 PM

Gotta set the record straight on Chick-fil-A. Everyone on here is misinformed. An operator up north donated sandwiches to a counseling seminar at a local church. We are asked to donate multiple times a day for a good many causes, and since marriage counseling is a platform for our own Winshape Charitable Organization along with providing foster children with homes, team building opportunities for area businesses, and many others, this was a cause that the operator felt inclined to donate to. The organization that was given sandwiches also champions defense of traditional marriage, and this became a problem for the PC police. Additionally, our president Dan Cathy was doing a radio interview with a Baptist organization and was asked about his stance on gay marriage. He gave his opinion (which does not reflect the views of the company, nor does he speak for everyone who works for the company). Last time I checked, we can all voice an opinion. I personally wrote Mike Huckabee a letter when he erroneously responded to a liberal article last year that reported misinformation and said that "Dan Cathy relented and gave in to LGBT supporters." The truth is he has always been pro-traditional marriage and always will be and never issued any kind of a statement retracting his original views. That is his right and his opinion as an American. At Chick-fil-A, we "treat all guests with honor, dignity, and respect" the same way I would treat anyone who enters my house. That's the way a person should be treated regardless of their gender, race, nationality, or sexual orientation. At this point, the police for political correctness will forever be out for blood. I don't see the nation coming back from this when its tentacles have such a grasp on a collective group in our society that is so rabidly vocal with no regard for facts or the truth. Maybe it makes them feel important to tear others down for voicing an opinion. I don't know. "Judge not, that ye be not judged. For with what judgement ye judge, ye shall be judged." The psychoanalysis of the critic is that he is harshest against people who have weaknesses similar to his own. So, when the critic screams, put a mirror in front of his face! See that he examines his own. He may find reason to keep silent...
God bless America, and God bless Clemson.

I wonder how long the BOT gave this matter serious consideration--doesn't sound to me like they gave it much at all. At the very least they could have asked representatives from the parties pushing for the change to speak at their meeting. This statement sounds more like a dismissal than a decision.

I'm very interested in knowing what their "other, more meaningful, initiatives" are. They should enumerate them. Saying they want them but not giving details is just deflection of the problem.

I appreciate that Clemson is trying to encourage minorities to come to campus. For example Call Me MISTER (which is run by a personal friend of mine) is doing awesome things, and there are minority mentoring programs all over campus. And I also appreciate that Clemson has demographics working against it, both historical and modern. Something like 70% of the student population comes from Upstate counties which themselves have low minority populations--anywhere from 7 to 20 percent, well below the state average. But I think Clemson can do more. Clemson should be an institution that is welcoming to all of our state's students. *Clemson* may say it welcomes all our state's students, but what do the *students* say? It is not a secret that minorities don't always feel comfortable at Clemson, and I think social media exacerbates that. Clemson must do a better job.

All that being said, Clemson's situation is not unique or even the most extreme. For example our country has a genocidal, arguably insane mass murderer on our $20 bill. So ultimately I think I agree with the BOT's decision not to rename Tillman Hall. However I think they need to do more to explain the university's relationship to Tillman and to pro-actively work against whitewashing that history.
