I know everyone has different opinions on this, and many valid points can be made. Here’s just my take. The problem with the BCS was that in a year like this year, barring an upset today, our Clemson Tigers could legitimately have been left out of the 1v2 natty game, because there’s 3 dominant teams this year.
I think the main goal is to make sure anyone who has a reasonable claim to be a “Top 2” team has a chance to play it out - and that’s it.
The playoff should be exclusive - both to make the regular season actually matter, and to make it an actual impressive accomplishment to make the playoff - as it currently is. Diluting the field to 8 teams makes it a much less impressive accomplishment, and allows teams to slide in with a couple losses.
I don’t think there will be a year where the 5th ranked team legitimately has a claim at the number one spot, and unlikely the number two spot. If so, they’ll almost certainly have a regular season loss to point to as their own fault. I know this means a conference champ gets left out - but they should be! Sorry Oregon - don’t lose to Arizona state. Sorry Okie - don’t lose to K state. The fourth spot is a bonus luxury to a likely undeserving of top 2 status team; don’t whine if you’re left out at 5.
and liked your statement about it's all about getting to the best 2 teams..and having 4 to get to that point is enough, not 8 teams of which most are 1 or 2 loss teams.
The point of 8 teams is to give SEC teams more chances. They’re pretty sure they are all the best teams in the country but they can’t say which one is best. The pre-season Top 10 rankings are just a shell game where they swap rankings among themselves depending on the outcomes. Give them enough tries and they’ll eventually get what they want.
