Who is the #1 WR in Clemson History and why?

iN A GAME YOU GOTTA WIN!I gotta go with a 3 way tie at 1..Tuttle,Butler,Nuke. ,,Tuttle pulled the ultimate game against Nebraska.Butler had afterburners and amazing body control. And Nuke was a man against boys his last yr... Watkins 1A.

He had an extra gear when the game was on the line. Single-handedly dragged us to victory in that Maryland game his freshman year.

the 50's......the very first game I ever saw Sammy Watkins play, I told my oldest friend he was the best WR Clemson had ever had. I've seen a ton of Tiger WR's and a bunch of good ones, but I still stand by my assessment.

Sammy Watkins without question.

There's no reason to debate. He was/is the complete package. Entire defenses were schemed to stop him, and they still were left dumbfounded. Other receivers have made their marks at Clemson, but none have ever completely changed the course of games like Sammy. If he can stay healthy, he's got the tools to be one of the best to ever play in the professional ranks as well.
Just writing this I am picturing that catch and run against Georgia. Holy cow. Greatness.

So your ? is who is the best or the top 3?

Watkins is the best in history. He has great hands, good size, great speed, great quickness, game intelligence, and was a winner.
Nuke had a great year and is a great WR, but I don't think he goes down as best in History. If he had more than 1 year of productivity then it would be tough to argue. He did have Sammy opposite of him taking a lot of the attn off of him too.
One could argue these as well, but you will not convince me of anyone greater that Watkins...Butler, Hopkins, Kelley, Tuttle, Gardner, Horne.
Now someone that did not have a stellar college career due to playing 3 positions, but has had the most successful NFL career is Dwight Clark.

he was the team's leading receiver 2 of the 3 years he was here, and his freshman year he lead the team even though he didn't start till mid season.

than Sammy. He didn't disappoint me (or us). As a former pass-catching TE, I think I'm a fair judge of receiver talent and both of them had IT. Both of them ran great routes, both of them could block, Sammy had a better burst of speed and would put his shoulder into a would-be tackler (say hello to UGA last year), Nuk was better at high-pointing the jump ball and going down to get the low ball. Both snatched the ball out of the air and were a joy to watch work in the seams.
I think Charone Peake will surprise a whole lot of folks in Athens and Lazy Leggett just might do the same thing.

Nuke was a good athlete his first year and a good WR his 2nd year. He was a great WR his 3rd year.
Sammy was a great WR his first year, good his 2nd, and All-World his 3rd.

that Sammy had to get him selected higher in the draft. They both were awesome but if its gametime situation and I gotta pick one I go with Nuk to beat a double team. See the ChicFila Bowl if you have any questions. Beat double and triple coverage against maybe the best defensive secondary in the nation all night long. Sammy might be able to do that but he seemed to get lost in those types of situations. Moreso than Nuk did anyway and Sammy had more natural talent.

Jerry Butler Was Pretty Special and Graduated (More)...

A great many of you never saw him and that is a shame. He was a great receiver in a predominately run oriented offense.
Perry Tuttle had to do it with a great option QB that did not throw a lot.
JB and PT would have feasted in this pass happy offense.
I won't say who the greatest was because that is unfair..
But I will say it has be a privilege to watch them all play

Productive consistently. His biggest attribute was his ability to break down being double and triple covered by his route running and competiveness. When it came to big games he was consistent. Sammy wasn't as good as Nuk was at being double covered. He sometimes would go quiet. See Fsu game last year and just about every ScR game. I think he would give in to frustration quicker. Still a solid #2 in clemson history.

JB was the Best,,How is that?

He was great in a time when RB's dominated the game....He graduated from Clemson and went on to have a good career in the NFL. Oh..He also made the single greatest "Catch" in Clemson history:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iANC8myJ5L4
Sammy Was great in a time when we are throwing 30-40 passes a game. JB was great when that number was half and made every catch matter.
JB did not screw up and get suspended for drugs....
We probably have a different definition of great...and that is cool.

good enough by an NFL team to trade up for the #1 pick is pretty amazing. To me it is more impressive than being chosen #1 by the Texans. Buffalo had to give up picks to trade up. That means to me that Buffalo thinks Sammy is a truly rare talent.

I would take Nuk over Sammy in the clutch.
If you're asking who was the best WR athlete we've had - Sammy.
But if you're asking who I would take first on my team - It's Nuk.
Nuk was far more valuable to us in 2012 than Sammy was to us in 2013. However, Sammy was crucial to our success in 2011.
It's a tough call, but overall I still take Nuk.

1. Sammy 2. Nuk 3. Jerry Butler 4. Terry Smith 5.
Jul 16, 2014, 1:48 PM
|
|
Perry Tuttle 6. Rod Gardner 7. Derek Hamilton
Sammy is # 1 because he was just flat better than the others as far as hands, yards after the catch, short threat, deep threat. etc. IMO, he had as much to do with our turnaround in 2011 as Boyd.

Everyone was playing off Sammy and how many WR screens did he get?
Sammy is a top 3 but "Greatest" will be subjective considering he left early, got suspended for drugs, had a marginal 2nd year and was in a pass-happy offense with a QB that made a lot of WR's look pretty darn good
