Kaiwan Lewis headed to Rutgers...

Rutgers received a major boost to an already solid recruiting class as Metro New York has learned of the verbal commitment made by South Carolina junior linebacker Kaiwan Lewis. Eligible for a final year as a transfer player, Lewis committed to the Scarlet Knights on Sunday morning following his official visit.

A native of Hammonton, New Jersey and a former three-star recruit, Lewis spent the past three seasons at South Carolina where he almost immediately integrated himself into their two-deep. By his sophomore year, he had earned a starting role with the SEC program. He comes to Rutgers as a scholarship player with one season left of eligibility.

Last weekend, Lewis took an official visit to Nebraska, another program that was interested in his services. Rutgers was the only other school he was seriously considering although Metro reported last week that he was beginning to receive some interest from Arizona.

His official visit this past weekend included a Sunday sit-down with head coach Kyle Flood.

“It was great fit for me. Between the two schools there wasn't a wrong decision. I feel I can accomplish my goals and further my education in law,” Lewis told Metro. “There is a great opportunity here at RU and I felt we could benefit from each other.

“[Also] my family would be able to see me play my final season of college football.”

Rutgers has had recent success with fifth-year transfers, including offensive lineman R.J. Dill as well as wide receiver Andrew Turzilli, who played for the program this past season..

He will play the MIKE linebacker role according to a source and would be in instant contention for a starting job.
