What is it with the state of Alabama and being a great football coach at Clemson
Jan 9, 2015, 9:55 PM

Frank Howard- Born in Barlow Bend, Alabama Danny Ford- Born in Gadsden, Alabama Dabo Swinney- Born in Birmingham, Alabama Tommy Bowden- Born in Birmingham, Alabama These are four of the greatest football coaches in Clemson history, just thought it was a rather cool coincidence.

Great observation. I think they all brought that "take no prisoners" attitude with them. JMHO.

You should eat at the Cracker Barrel in Pelham AL, I think his mom used to work there or still does - anyway - they love CLEMSON and Dabo there.

the president of the company, a Bama grad and prominent supporter, had become acquainted with Dabo. When we hired Dabo as an assistant back in '03, this guy raved about Dabo to me, about what a great guy he was and how he couldn't understand how Bama let him get away, and he assured me that Dabo would do big things at Clemson. Looks like Dabo was in the right place at the right time for us!

A definite case of mistaken identity. No way anyone who knew him could have thought he should have been promoted to anything after his epic fail at Clemson.

Hootie was defensive coordinator for an Arkansas team that

was very close to the national championship the year before we hired him.
He was viewed as a hot up-and-coming assistant at a power program ... a lot like Brent Venables might be viewed today.
The fact that he wasn't head coach material wasn't easily recognizable until he had to produce and by then it was too late.

It happened on his watch, but it certainly wasn't his idea. How do I know? Simple. It was a great idea, therefore it couldn't have been Hootie's.

He should have kept that job, then, because he didn't do squat at Clemson as a HC. At Ark he must have inherited a great system, or maybe Frank broyles made the coaching decisions. He definitely got over-promoted, because he was a terrible HC. I thought that only the majority of players thought that way, but after speaking with some of his assistant coaches at one of the Letterwinner's events, I found that even they thought he did a poor job. He was promoted beyond his abilities. Sadly it happens a lot.

What's gonna be cool is when we play Alabama for the national championship and open up a pipeline from Alabama and start pulling some of the state's best players.

Hate to pour cold water on your analogy, but the worst coach ever to come to Clemson was Hootie, and he, too, was from AL and played at AL. Just saying that there is a bad "floater" in every punch bowl.

While I do despise Hootie and his epic fail as a coach, it has nothing to do with the idea of the Paw, which happened on Hootie's watch, but it is very, very doubtful he had anything to do with the idea.

Please try and find someone else to agree with you that Hootie was anything other than a terrible mistake for our program. If you think otherwise, you didn't know him. I haven't talked to anybody on his teams who has a dab of respect for him. There won't be anybody relieving themselves on his grave, though. None of us would stand in line for him.

not just for hiring Dabo, facility upgrades, and the wins over the Peckerheads, but also for establishing a solid recruiting program that brought in top level athletes with high moral character and which has formed the foundation for our continued successes.
You don't do Clemson University any favors by criticizing Tommy Bowden.

Heisman coached at Auburn, then quit coaching football. Riggs sought Heisman and hired him to coach at Clemson.
