Charleston Weather

Sep 5, 2017, 3:17 PM

Hi Tiger fans.

I'm new to the Charleston area. Should I be boarding up windows? Or would that even help things at all in a Cat 5?

Thanks for your thoughts.

Go Tigers

I would leave the windows and doors open... that will likely

allow the wind to pass through and not damage the house as much

Re: I would leave the windows and doors open... that will likely

Sep 5, 2017, 3:37 PM

The purpose of boarding up is primarily to keep flying debris from penetrating windows and doors. Very few structures will stand 150-175 mph sustained winds. The roof usually lifts allowing the wind to blow the walls out and takes the roof away at the same time.

are you sure about that?

Sep 5, 2017, 3:45 PM

you have a link?

True or False -- The wind can pass through more easily if the windows and doors are open?

Its not THAT the wind is blowing...

Its WHAT the wind is blowing.

Sep 5, 2017, 3:53 PM

i'll put it this way...

If there were debris flying, is there a better chance of it passing through the house with the doors and windows open, or closed?

Re: so you refuse to answer the question?

Sep 5, 2017, 3:57 PM

If by debris you mean an empty grocery bag, yes it will fly through the house without much issue or damage.

However if by debris you mean a Volvo...

Sep 5, 2017, 3:58 PM [ in reply to so you refuse to answer the question? ]

I will crack one window on each side of the house :) I get what both of you are saying.

I would probably rather the house get completely shredded and torn down than getting filled with water and having to deal with all that fungi and crap. Would rather just start all over. Of course, I would be happier with some limbs down on the ground and all homes safe and people safe.

If you get hit with a volvo, it doesn't matter how many situps you did that morning....

Of course, everything will fly out of the house.

If I were you I would seriously start planning to evacuate. Don't wait until it's too late.

Godspeed!

Sep 5, 2017, 3:46 PM

for the weekend. Tell them you are evacuating/fleeing the coast because of hurricane. When they quote you the $500/night rate, report them to the authorities for price gouging.

Re: Charleston Weather

Sep 5, 2017, 3:46 PM

Charleston Native my entire life. Hurricanes constantly threaten us but rarely do what they're supposed to. If I was you living on JI I do believe evacuating would be the smarter thing to do because of flooding. Buy what you need to board your windows before all the stores are bought out, if it's for sure going to hit us then board and evacuate because getting on and off the island after landfall might be a more difficult task than you think. Prayers and wishes to you brother.

Sep 5, 2017, 3:50 PM

Thank you for the comments and thoughts and prayers. I actually do not currently live there at the moment but my home is there. A little bit of marsh sits a couple of blocks behind the home in an area that I guess I would say is central in James Island. I'm close to Clarks Sound though.

I don't even know who I could get to even board up the house. My current handyman is non existent and does not return any calls. Yard man is the same way. LOL Tough to find good hard working guys in the area it seems.

Sep 5, 2017, 4:32 PM

through a hurricane. Most everyone who has lived in SC for awhile pretty much has been through a few.

Doubtful it hits Charleston anyways. The forecasts are starting to all come together now. Looks like the Gulf side of Fla is most likely gonna get hammered.

Re: people are assuming since you evidently have never been

Sep 5, 2017, 5:06 PM

Thanks Scooter.

Well I'm from the upstate so I've never personally been impacted by a Hurricane, at least in regards to a home. But recently purchased a property on James Island. Currently renting it out at the moment. Yeah, I know about the people from Ohio coming down South. I see two of the Ohio flags flying in the neighborhood.

authorities. Really. Don't come to us, we don't know. We all came to a game in a monsoon/ hurricane remnant that, frankly, should've been called off due to dangerous conditions, and we got lucky, though the people in columbia didn't.
