Someone please explain the "pooch" kick to me?

Nov 8, 2015, 12:23 PM

We kicked off the game with one deep in the end zone. Then we started with the "pooch" kicks...WHY???? Close to the end of the game we had a 3pt lead and they return the ball to the 50 yard line!!!!

Less opportunity for huge run back play

Nov 8, 2015, 12:28 PM

by the return specialists. Yes you give up 10-20 yards in field position but it's much harder for the receiving team to set up blocking that allows a full runback. Also an "up" man will sometimes field the ball with much less danger of an explosive play.

It's a very typical "safe" play when preserving a win late in the game.

Yes, but why not blast it through the end zone (assuming we're capable) every time. Guaranteed on the 25. I obviously don't understand it either.

Maybe they did it to try to get the kickoff team time to get down there with more hang time.

I had to sit down for every kickoff and not watch. Our kick coverage is just so suspect, I depended on the fans around me to know how we covered them.

It also,..............when done correctly,.......gives the kicking team an opportunity to recover a botched catch by the receiving team.

We kicked ours a little too deep.

The idea is to get one of the up guys to field it.

When you hold a team 12 or 14 times on third downs and...

Nov 8, 2015, 12:34 PM

prevent them from reaching the goal line twice in the red zone and becomes obvious to a couple million people that your opponent's only chance of scoring a TD is on a kick return you might want to consider that giving them half a field is better than rising a return for six points.

I don't know, folks don't seem to understand the probabilities so I recommend the 'eyetest.'

But if we can kick it through the endzone and guarantee it on the 25 then why wouldn't we do that every time? I mean, we all agree KO coverage is suspect. Seems like a touchback has the highest probability of success considering our coverage.

I'm legitimately asking because I must be missing something. Why don't we force a touchback on every kickoff?

I totally agree. Spot the ball on the 25 and take away the chance of a return. I will take that scenario all day!!!

We should try to go for the touchback. We won't get it every time but you play the percentages. On the occasions it fall short, you do the best job you can in tackling the guy; Just coach them to cover the #### return.

The pooch kick is a bad deal.

I think the percentages favor the receiving team. I haven't seen the stats lately, but I remember we were only getting a touchback every fourth or fifth kick. The best bet would be to recruit a specialist that can consistently kicka touchback.

It's become a really bad idea. I hope the coaches scrap it and kick it deep.

I can count maybe 2 well executed pooch kicks Clemson has had. Just let Lakip blast it in the first row.

Or kick it OB. Better than our pooch kick right now. I about broke my tv when we took the lead, pooched it, and they returned it to the 49.
