Interesting Dental Situation

Jun 25, 2020, 3:53 PM

LittleRyanAdidas is 9 and started complaining about a toothache. I should rephrase. He went from no tooth issues, to whimpering, screaming, like he had been shot by a gun. He's not a complainer, either. I looked in his mouth and holy crap. His back molar was damnnear rotted out.

Went to the dentist today and they were equally as suprised as we were with the rapid decay in that tooth.

Dentist suggested that the particular tooth must have had an enamel deficiency and asked if he had been on any heavy antibiotic loads around age 6 (when that tooth was developing). Sure as crap, he had a horrible bout with strep around that time and was on every antibiotic in the book.

They're gonna pull the tooth. His 12 year molars should move in just fine and it'll be a non-issue. He'll probably never need braces, which is nice.

I just thought that was crazy about that one tooth not having much enamel because of antibiotics.

TLDR: my boy won't need braces, but he'll probably need dentures by age 15.

A root canal would be expensive... probably a grand or so.

Pulling the tooth is $200. Perfect.

Dentist says sedation will be $500.

I got the wife to ask if he could just use Novocain. Dentist said that would be "barbaric".

lulz. Now sarahadidas feels like a moron for relaying my question.

Also... barbaric??? You were spot on about the dentist being a snowflake.

I told wife we'll just get the boy drunk AF and drop him off.

Sounds like your dentist needs a little bit of perspective.

When did they start sedating kids to pull teeth?

Jun 25, 2020, 4:10 PM [ in reply to The hits keep coming. ]

I've had 16 pulled and the only ones I was out for were the wisdom teeth. I succinctly remember the pressure and popping of those effers being extracted. Makes my nuts hurt just thinking about it.

I don't know... I mean, I feel so bad for him being in pain that I'm fine with it. The dr. assured us that it's not from lack of brushing and that his hygiene is good (or as good as can be expected for a 9 year old boy).

I'm telling ya, having to listen to him and see him doubled over and not being able to do anything besides give him motrin and wait for it to kick in was gut-wrenching.

Glad to know they don’t have to suffer through that. Hope it all works out!

Did you try stomping his foot hard to distract him?

Jun 25, 2020, 5:13 PM [ in reply to Re: When did they start sedating kids to pull teeth? ]

He'll be too focused on his foot to worry about the tooth.

Or do like my dad and say 'you'll give him something to cry about'. Note: It doesn't work at all.

Glad you're getting this fixed quickly. They have 'caine' type drugs that can be sniffed now, but probably don't numb enough for the extraction. He'll earn some ice packs and ice cream.

I have all of em. Lol except the wisdoms. Apparently my baby teeth didn’t fall out fast enough for my orthodontist so they yanked the effers out to get on with the braces. Torture!

Good grief....

My 10 yo daughter just had a tooth pulled and the dentist shot her up with Novocain, loosened the tooth then had my daughter pull her own tooth out with a pair of pliers. She didn’t feel a thing.

Yes that dentist is a snowflake

I had several teeth pulled w just Novocain

Jun 30, 2020, 7:04 PM [ in reply to The hits keep coming. ]

It’s fine. Just a lot of pressure and tooth is out. My son wanted gas for his last tooth pull but I made him do the shots in mouth. He was fine

SWEET BABY CHEESES.

Jun 26, 2020, 9:11 AM

Due to the fact that I'm not a puny human, I've never had any dental issue whatsoever.

EVER.

But I did have my wisdom teeth pulled, and my old school dentist crawled up in the chair and yanked them out with pliers while smoking a cigarette. I think he might have given me a shot to numb my gums, but I don't specifically remember that. Packed the holes with gauze, and I met my pals at Pizza Inn for pizza and pitchers of beer that night, because pain don't hurt and Pizza Inn wasn't scared to serve us when we were underage. Plus, I walked there barefoot in sub-freezing weather, and it was uphill both ways, AND I had to fight off wolves on the way there, and on the way back after I was drunk. Then when I got home, I had to pull the plow over our 20 acre kudzu plot because the mule was tired.

getting my 4 wisdom teeth cut out

Jun 26, 2020, 9:56 AM

was the first dental work I had to that point (no cavities) other than when my front 6 top teeth were smashed by the fireman's pole at McDonalds.

I ate hard-shell tacos that night for dinner along with chips and salsa.

beesh, I didn't even own shoes.

I'm talking about an actual fireman's pole, not a euphemism for a peanus. Felt that I needed to clarify.

One of my kids had 4 rotten baby teeth

Jun 26, 2020, 9:15 AM

when she was about 3. I forget exactly what it was, but basically no enamal at all. We had to get baby teeth fillings. All the other teeth were fine.

My youngest son

Jun 30, 2020, 4:24 PM

Had the same issues with 'soft' teeth due to antibiotics. He was only 3-4...had a couple capped to get him to his perms coming in.

Had a wisdom tooth come in with a cavity. I would drive up from Jax to Charleston for my exams...so told him I was driving back after the appointment. He already had the pain killer and 'crowbar' in hand to yank the tooth...asked me, "You're not driving with your mouth, are you?" Uh...no...and he went to work! Definitely no snow on him...or me, for that matter! ;)
