What is the ideal number of teams for the best CFB playoff?

I think 8 or 16 but I like reading the opinions of others

From a non power 5.

Only conference champs should get to play for a national title. If that means a 7-6 ACC champ VT gets into the playoffs over a 12-1 Clemson, then so be it.

Jul 17, 2018, 3:31 PM [ in reply to Ugh. I would probably have to quit watching CFB if ]

College football already has a nearly complete 1st Rd of playoffs with the conference championship games.

Winning your division gets you into the 1st Rd of the playoffs...winning your conference gets you into the 2nd round.

If winning divisions and conferences don't mean anyyhing, why have them?

I agree. That would put 6 teams in the CFP

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

That would last right up until the Pac 12 champ got in

Jul 17, 2018, 11:23 AM [ in reply to 6 ]

at 10-3 while a really good 11-1/12-1 team from the Big Ten / ACC / SEC got left at home. I'm all for giving the best G5 team a shot, but outside of that i still support the idea of the "best" teams making the playoff - even when "best" is a bit subjective.

If you want 5 auto-bids for conference champs + 1 bid for the G5, then you really need 8 to include the 2 best at-large teams, at least one of which is likely to be better several other teams in the playoff.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Eight would get Notre Dame type situations in wouldn't it?

Jul 17, 2018, 11:27 AM

three at large teams, even if one team is under a preset criteria like the runner-up scenario some have hinted at on here - therefore leaving us with two actual at large teams

As long as Clemson keeps getting in, 4. Whenever Clemson

Jul 17, 2018, 10:34 AM

gets left out, then I'd say 6 or 8 depending on where Clemson is ranked.

If we are ranked 6, I'd say 6 would be very ideal.

If we are ranked 9, then I'd say honestly, we should probably look at 16 teams.

Best Is The Standard

Re: What is the ideal number of teams for the best CFB playoff?

Jul 17, 2018, 10:39 AM

I'd say 6 or 8. With all major conference champions getting in. Not that I think the Big 12 or Pac 12 are very good conferences but they deserve to have a spot in the playoffs as well and a best of 5 team having a chance to get in if they end up undefeated like UCF last year. Over the years there has been a few of those that really impressed during bowl games but was left out because of who they played during the regular season. If it's 8 teams it would leave 3 at large bids for teams that did not win their conference.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: What is the ideal number of teams for the best CFB playoff?

Jul 17, 2018, 11:20 AM

Only problem with 6 is the bye scenario. In a 15 game season a bye is too valuable for playoff teams. With the current conference setup and 129 teams it is nearly impossible to judge who are the two best teams and giving the apparent top 2 teams a bye might be self fulfilling, as those teams would win most of the time.

Jul 17, 2018, 11:16 AM

eight (8) is the right number.

Take each of the Power 5 conference champions, two at-large selections, and possibly a non-Power 5 team.

If there are no solid non-Power 5 candidates in a particular year, you take another at-large selection.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

8: Every power 5 conference champions,

Jul 17, 2018, 11:05 AM

1 non-power-five team, and 2 at large teams.

Only "fair" solution.

Only way to truly compare conferences is head-to-head match ups.

If a conference champion gets smoked, then so be it. 31 nuthin's gonna happen.

But at least no conference or team would have a legitimate gripe.

that would mean 2 teams get a bye. That is unfair in college football because it's a HUGE advantage to not have played a game and impossible to correctly decide who the 2 bye teams are. multiples of 4 are the only answer. 4, 8, 16, 32, etc.

If you want a PLAYOFF, then FOUR is your number. If you want a Tournament, then go ahead and allow the 'also-rans' to join in. It isn't that hard to select four teams from which you'll get the Best Team in the land.

Jul 17, 2018, 12:36 PM

to include teams that have no chance of actually winning and if you include 16 teams there are certainly going to be quite a few teams that are incapable of winning 4 games. Also, i can't see 17 game CFB seasons happening so where do you start cutting games? 11 game regular season and no conference championship games? 10 regular season games?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: That's just too many IMO. There's no reason

Jul 17, 2018, 1:43 PM

I've always believed every Saturday is anything can happen Saturday. There would be upsets, and Cinderella teams, just like the basketball tournament. The regular season would have to be shortened, of course, maybe by one game. How does Division II do it? They've had a playoff for as long as I remember.

8 if you take 5 Conf Champs. But my ideal scenario is 10 Div Champs plus 1 Non P5 and 3 at large. Top 4 get byes, play in games in place of Conf Champs, 1st Sat in Dec and 8 team playoff starting Sat after/on Christmas and New Years, championship on a Monday night. This only adds 1 more game. If number of games is still a problem, drop 12th game FCS games but split some TV money with those schools to make up for lost game.

ACC Champ
B1G Champ
SEC Champ
Champs of Big 12 and Pac 12 play each other on Conference Champion weekend to decide who goes.

Have the group of 5 do thier own parallel championship games.

Everyone knows exactly what the have to do to get in before the season even starts. If a conference doesn't like who the send they can always adjust how they determine their champion.

First I’d like to say that there are some pretty good ideas/responses on this thread for sure. Those adamant about staying at 4 I’m sure will feel differently the minute clemson finishes at #5 or 6.

I think all conferences should dump their cupcake games and also play the same amount of conference games. There are P5 conferences that play 9 league games and are not allowed to schedule FCS opontmet (no matter if they are in state or not)
Doing this would allow for a 6-8 team playoff, provide more good games in the regular season, and have more parody when comparing playoff contenders. 6-8 team playoff would have conference champs as a lock, and then include some dang good teams that maybe had an extra hiccup early in the season like a USC last year but on fire at the end of the season. I think this would help ensure that no one is unfairly rewarded for an easy schedule or punished for a hard one.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: What is the ideal number of teams for the best CFB playoff?

Jul 17, 2018, 7:44 PM

6 teams in the CFP. The top 2 teams get a first round bye then 3 v. 4 & 5 v. 6 Then it goes to current format. If both of the top 2 teams win then no team plays more than 2 rounds as the 2 lower tier winners. That would be the most probable outcome statistically.
