An uncle, brother, cousin?
An agent disguised as a friend?
And how does this board know which recruits have them? Are they common?

It’s usually someone outside the immediate family who is advising or even talking with coaches on the recruit’s behalf and looking to further his own interests maybe even ahead of the recruit’s interest.
Not sure how message board posters “know” when a recruit has one.

In a nutshell:
- Takes a recruit to camps, campus visits
- speaks to college coaches on recruits behalf
- “Normally” It would be a recruits mom or dad. After the parents it’s typically the high school coach
If it’s anyone other than a legal guardian or high school coach....there’s normally going to be issues.
The only people who know if shenanigans are going on are the college recruiting staff. However if you follow recruiting closely, you can figure it out.....it’s NOT hard. I played college ball and dealt with boosters and a lot of people I’m associated with NOW did the same when they played. An associate of mine also handles business dealings with professional athletes. I can tell you with great authority that the process starts much earlier than one would think.
I was rather blown away myself.....

Although I appreciate all the humor this was the answer I was looking for. I was naive to think high school kids wouldn’t have them but I guess anything can happen when money may be on the horizon. Just thought good ole mom and dad would serve that role.

Most fans are naive.
I think a lot of college fans would be turned off if they really knew what recruiting is like.
