What does a quality control coach do??

Mar 17, 2016, 10:07 AM

Do the have little control charts and everything? I dont want this to seem "mean" but I guess the is a "standard deviation" from my "average" post. Also does he get to refer to his statistics book for these? I could never learn those formulas. :)

Why heck , he checks the specs . Anything looks suspect , he elects to redirect until someone inspects the trainwreck . Then they interject and change what he checked until its perfect , i suspect.

My old man worked quality control at Lockheed Missles and Space at the weapons station in Charleston when he got out of the Navy in '79 , working on the Polaris missles being assembled there .
As far as I could tell , he did initial inspections on guidance and electronic components before the engineers finalized the whole shabang .
So he was like an engineer but without the degree or paygrade.

We have so much quality here that we need someone to control it. I wonder if this hiring has anything to do with the arrests. Atlanta area coach, can relate to the kids, kept RN clean and out of the news under his watch, hopefully he can help our guys or atleast get them past the drug test.

The job title may be a bit inconsequential....

Mar 17, 2016, 11:08 AM

The NCAA has a strict limit on the number of on-the-field coaches. In addition to the head coach, teams are allowed nine full-time assistants and four graduate assistants.

However, there are no limitations to the size of the off-field support staff.

With programs always seeking an edge, quality control coaches have been added to assist the full-time staff in whatever capacity is necessary.

Heck, some coaching staffs have between eight and ten guys who do this kind of thing (i.e., assist the full-time coaches and allow them to have more time to be creative in their game-planning, spend more time with players, and recruit).

Re: The job title may be a bit inconsequential....

Good info but what is the point of the rule? Is it to make it seem like they are trying to create an equal playing field? Saying you can only call 9 people Coach but you can have as many as you want if you just call them something else just seems like it's wasting everyone's time. Kind of like a hookers are highly illegal but escorts you can get in the phone book.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

You can effectively have as many as you want, but....

Mar 17, 2016, 11:26 AM

only nine of them can actually coach during a game.

What I don't get is why you didn't use quotation marks or

Mar 17, 2016, 12:03 PM [ in reply to The job title may be a bit inconsequential.... ]

source your information? Or is it coincidence that this is basically word-for-word what you just said?

"The NCAA has a strict limit on the number of on-field coaches. In addition to the head coach, teams are allowed nine full-time assistants and four graduate assistants. But there are no limitations to the size of the off-field support staff.

Followed by a quote from Urban Meyer in the article "...Some places have like 8, 10, 12 guys that do this. Its goal is to assist the full-time coaches and allow them to have more time to be creative in their game-planning and it also allows them to spend more time with the players."

So Biggie, is there something you'd like to tell us?

If nothing else, coordinate staff member's time in stalking/shadowing the dope smokers to ensure the quality press coming out of the media about Clemson. This is yet another black eye sans Battle, Sammy, Cain Lakip and all the others. Dabo needs to kick some dumb potheads off his team! "To much is given, much is expected" and his coaches and teammates deserve better. Yes, I've made many mistakes but then I didn't get treated as a God, I paid for all of my education at Clemson and a trip home once a month was my only travel. Theses guys travel first class, get COA stipends and all in all have it good and should appreciate their situation, most do but these dope heads screw it up for everybody! Can Dabo Beat or Flog these idiots or is that unacceptable? Maybe bead boarding?

Here's an article on it:

Mar 17, 2016, 2:14 PM

http://www.nj.com/rutgersfootball/index.ssf/2016/01/what_is_a_quality_control_coach_rutgers_assistant.html

"That leads to the question: What the heck is a quality control coach?

The NCAA has a strict limit on the number of on-field coaches. In addition to the head coach, teams are allowed nine full-time assistants and four graduate assistants. But there are no limitations to the size of the off-field support staff.

With programs always seeking an edge, quality control coaches have been added to assist the full-time staff. The 432-page NCAA rules manual makes no mention of quality control coaches, but the main restriction is that they aren't allowed to work with players on the field.

So, what do quality control coaches do?

"Quality control is the buzzword now," Okruch said in an interview with NJ Advance Media. "The NFL has a million guys. Now, major universities are trying. Some have unpaid interns, some have paid quality control — the way they fill out the remainder of that staff is very unique.

"What are you? You're an analyst. You're a guy that checks for potential landmines for things that might go wrong. You help get stuff where it needs to get. (Ohio State coach) Urban (Meyer) said, 'I'd like to try this,' so we did and it worked out great. Some places have like 8, 10, 12 guys that do this. Its goal is to assist the full-time coaches and allow them to have more time to be creative in their game-planning and it also allows them to spend more time with the players." "

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Also, per wiki:

Mar 17, 2016, 2:17 PM

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quality_control_coach
"A quality control coach is a member of the coaching staff of an American football or Canadian football team whose primary job is preparing the team for a game, beginning sometimes two or three weeks before the actual game.[1] Their primary duties include preparing for the game by analyzing game film for statistical analysis. There are three different types of quality control teams, offensive, defensive, and special teams. It is typically an entry level position for National Football League (NFL) coaches before moving on to positional jobs and coordinator positions, with some, like Jon Gruden, later becoming a Super Bowl winning head coach.[2] Offensive quality control will chart the upcoming teams defense for various down and distance situations, field positions and how many times they use various personnel groupings. Defensive quality control will do similar analysis of the offense. Special teams quality control will figure out what players are used in various special teams situations like kickoff, punt, etc. On January 20, 2016, the Buffalo Bills hired Kathryn Smith as their special teams quality control coach, making her the first full-time female coach in NFL history.[3]"
