Serious Question - We pulled Marlin Lane's schollie for UT

Jul 29, 2012, 6:35 PM

visit. Will Dabo pull Nkemdiche's schollie for Oregon and USC visits?

Will Dabo spend the next few months trying to talk RN out of two free west coast trips or acknowledge that some players are more equal than others and that superstar recruits will be treated differently than star recruits?

Interesting debate between pragmatism and taking the moral high ground. However it turns out ... Go Tigers!

The nature of Lane's visit to U Tenn was the biggest

Jul 29, 2012, 6:38 PM

problem - he canceled a visit to Clemson with our other 2011 recruits for a big weekend in favor of going there for the weekend instead.

Don't know how hard and fast these rules are that people like to cite but it seems like it's a case by case situation based on what the kids are telling the coaches and how they actually carry out the process.

We pulled Lane's because he was supposed to be in...

Jul 29, 2012, 6:42 PM

Clemson the weekend of his UT visit. Lane did not tell the coaching staff this, and when the coaching staff tried to contact him following that weekend, he did not respond. Lane was going to switch to UT, but he was going to do it by other means than letting the Clemson coaching staff know first hand, before he either announced in the media before signing day, or by pulling the hat switch a roo on signing day. The Clemson coaches knew this, and that's the reason his schollie was pulled. Not because he visited another school.

I don't know for sure, but you really think he was already

planning on swithcing to UT? The rest of your comments are spot on, but I always thought he was a Clemson guy. He's talked Cortez Davis into pulling the switcharoo from FSU and picking Clemson.

I have heard that Lane was told by the CU staff NOT to come to CU, and that he chose to visit UT that weekend instead. Lane had already visited Purdue, Auburn, Miami, and FSU. Several of which he went with Davis. Lane has contended all along that he told Swinney he wanted to take his 5 OVs, and that Swinney was fine with it. Lane had been committed to CU since his sophomore season.

What probably got it all going downhill was Swinney's decision to change his recruiting philosophy during the 2010 season. Lane had made some comments during the AU visit that he was seriously considering them.

Then Davis is reported in an interview with Canesport.com's Gary Ferman during his and Lane's visit to Miami that "I'm serious about Miami and I think he (Lane) is too." The pair remain committed to Clemson but could be looking around. "It's all even," Davis told Ferman. "Nobody is in front."

CU staff asked Lane to firm up his commitment to them and cancel his remaining OVs. Lane did publicly confirm his commitment to CU was still strong, but didn't want to end his visits, as he has stated all along that he informed CU that he wanted to take all his OVs and that they were going back on their word to him that he could. CU coaches reportedly contacted Lane on his phone as he was on his way to the UT OV and told him to turn around, or his offer was pulled. Lane stated that he was almost in TN when this happened, and he got pissed. We know the rest of the story.....

Dabo could allow RN to visit other schools and not pull

Jul 29, 2012, 6:45 PM

his schollie without playing favorites or having a double standard, all while maintaining the moral high ground.

It all depends on the understanding they had before the committment was made. RN may have told Dabo he wanted to commit but he would like to continue to visit other schools just for the fun and travel. This may not have been the understanding with Lane. Easy for us here on the board to speculate what goes on behind closed doors when in fact none of us really know.

A lot of it has to being honest with the staff

Good answers folks - understand the "pot" response ...

Welcome the thumbs-down touches for keeping it real ... not sure the Tennessee visit reply is accurate. I recall reading T-Net back when Lane told our coaches he wanted to visit TN a week in advance and was "warned" not to go or else ...

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

he was warned not to go

Jul 30, 2012, 7:50 AM

because he had been scheduled to visit Clemson that weekend and help recruit other kids during the visit.

It pizzed the coaches off that he chose to go to Tenn rather than uphold his prior schedule in which he would have been in Clemson rather than Tenn that weekend.

It was one of our bigger recruiting weekends and the coaches were depending on Lane to help out with the uncommitted kids.

It wasn't because of the visit. It's because he showed his ### on the visit.

it's like jimmy johnson said...he'd cut a third team guy for falling asleep in a meeting to make a point...but if troy aikman had fallen asleep, he'd give him a nudge to wake him up.
