Original name of Tillman Hall was the Main Building...

Jan 14, 2015, 3:02 PM

Only got named Tillman Hall because his son was on the board of trustees and pushed for it because even way back in the 40's Clemson was trying to distance itself from Tillman's legacy. If you look at Clemson's history, Clemson has been very proactive in distancing itself from the ugly aspects of the old South and Jim Crow era south. The country gentleman mascot, which looked like a plantation owner, was done away with in the 40's. And Clemson had a smooth transition to integration, unlike a lot of colleges in the South. Also Clemson integrated before SCU.

Just saying

I seriously doubt back in the 40's they were trying to distance themselves from anyone back in that time.

Mr. Main was pretty influential

he had buildings, streets, and water pipes named after him.

Of course on the not so purty side, they did name the line of shooting heroine after him.

NOBODY agrees with Ben Tillman's racial views today. NOBODY! Tillman hall was given that name, because without him there would be no Clemson. He fought for the forming of Clemson College against determined opposition from those in the legislature strongly opposed it. They knew it would be in direct competition with USC for students and funding.

From former Prez Barker on the country gentleman...

Jan 14, 2015, 5:50 PM [ in reply to nothing says plantation owner like a top hat, purple tales ]

who attended Clemson back in the 60's.

"As Clemson’s population became more diverse, we became more aware of existing symbols that represented our university at sports and other public events. These symbols included the playing of “Tiger Rag” and “Dixie,” as well as the Tiger and Country Gentleman mascots, and the Confederate flag. Clemson officials listened carefully to our new, more diverse student body. It was clear that some of these symbols were stronger than others in representing the kind of place Clemson wanted to be and the kind of future Clemson envisioned for itself.
Again, President Edwards and the Clemson Board of Trustees led Clemson University into a bright future, maintaining aspects of its traditions — including “Tiger Rag” and the Tiger mascot — and letting the other symbols — the Country Gentleman mascot, the Confederate flag and “Dixie” — be a part of Clemson’s past. Of course, the Tiger Paw and the University Seal were added later to symbolize the Clemson we know today. Now, it is difficult to imagine Clemson University without the Tiger mascot, the Tiger Paw, the University Alma Mater and “Tiger Rag.”
