Reasonable expecations for Lee?

Jun 18, 2015, 4:02 PM

Obviously there's going to be some geniuses on here who want to get rid of Lee as soon as we lose a game next year but what are reasonable expectations for Lee's tenure?

I say NCAA Tourney by year 2. Within 5 years, regularly hosting Regionals and playing in Supers. Back to Omaha by year 7 with an ACC title somewhere in there.

What say ye--too low? Too high?

HELL HE WILL BE FIRED IF THAT IS ALL HE DOES.

I guess the real issue is, I think he has more

rebuilding to do than we realize.

I don't think the talent on campus is where it needs to be right now and I know it's going to take a couple of classes to get back into gear.

Yep & he should be with those results.***

I'd think we should expect to stay close to .500 for the

Jun 18, 2015, 4:08 PM

regular season. Maybe even 5 or so games below .500; anything above that and I'll be happily surprised.

Of course, I'd like to see us host a regional next season, but you did say "reasonable".

As far as the next few seasons after 2016, I'd be satisfied with steadily increasing numbers in the wins column, and definitely expect us in the tournament again by his 3rd season and hopefully a trip back to Omaha by his 5th.

I expect us to have a winning season next year and make the NCAAT. Thats just the expectation the program has set so I would be disappointed if we are awful next season. However, I would understand its part of the process.

If Lee is the coach, recruiter, etc. that they say he is then we should expect a god tourney run within his first 3 years. Its not like our program is broke and on hard times. We've just struggled with some pitching (overall) and fundamental issues the past few years.

Watched his teams closely for 5 years

Jun 18, 2015, 4:13 PM

I grew up going to Clemson games but landed in Charleston and have been a season ticket holder for CofC for several years.

A few things you can expect from Monte Lee teams:

1. Home Runs, and lots of them. CofC is always top 5 in team home runs.
2. In-state talent - Monte does a fantastic job of cleaning up on instate guys including instate Juco guys
3. Great defense
4. No bunts - Guy on first and second with no outs, you will not see a bunt. It's frustrating at times, but he lives and dies by big innings, not small ball

I will miss his teams as they provided most of my weekend entertainment the last several years in the Spring.

Doesn't really steal either. Definitely not a fan of small ball.

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Great insight. Thanks for sharing.

Jun 18, 2015, 4:24 PM [ in reply to Watched his teams closely for 5 years ]

I love the fact that he seems to be the opposite of small ball. That was one of my biggest complaints about Leggett. We need big bats, and big innings. And of course, disciplined play in the field to minimize costly errors.

I'm really excited to see what he can do. I believe he will be very successful here.

If Monte shows up assuming that he is going to do items 1 and 2, like he did in Charleston, he will fail. Patriot's POint is a launching pad, with the wind always blowing out. Clemson is exactly the opposite. Yes, we can always hit a few more home runs, but you will never see as many hit at Clemson as at Patriot's Point.

It is a lot harder to get JUCO players into Clemson. Monte knows that, and took the job anyway.

For Monte to succeed at Clemson he is going to have to come up with a somewhat different plan from the one that worked in Charleston. Monte cannot control the admission process. Any change in that regard will have to come from higher up.

And I will bet you that he does not end up with many more SC guys than Jack did. He may get a few more, but the bulk of the talent will ALWAYS have to come from out of state. There's just not that much ACC and SEC level talent in SC.

Don't get me wrong. I think he will do well. But the strategy will end up being a lot different than simply bringing C of C to Clemson.

Re: Reasonable expecations for Lee?

considering we've had winning seasons and going regionals, i would expect that would be the minimum expectation. hosting and so on would be advancing which i think is expected by year 3. if not, then we need to ask did we upgrade the program? only time will tell.

Re: Reasonable expecations for Lee?

Jun 18, 2015, 4:19 PM

Next season: Above .500. NCAA Tournament is icing.

Year 2: NCAA tournament

Year 3: 35-40 wins, host a regional

By year 4 and onward, we ought to be a consistent top 10-15 team and make the supers on a fairly regular basis. And I truly believe in Monte Lee's ability to make that happen.

Re: Reasonable expecations for Lee?

Jun 18, 2015, 4:20 PM

I would like to see him bring in recruits that:

- can bunt
- can field and turn plays
- can run the bases successfully without screwing it up
- pitch (sheesh - we need pitching to improve tremendously, and more than 1-2 pitchers)
- can hit well enough to score when the bases are loaded and no outs

If he can possibly find some of those recruits, that would be a great start. And we need a new 3rd base coach. Let's start there and see how it goes.

:) well - you asked.

What I think the real expectations are. (long)

Jun 18, 2015, 4:43 PM

If he finishes below .500 that would be the first time since 1957 and if he finishes at .500 that would be the first time since 1964. So, if next year is successful next year he must finish above .500 and to be very successful next year he needs to make a regional. After next year he better host most years and make it to Omaha or Tigernet will call for his head. Also, he needs to leave the jerseys and pants alone for the most part. Minor tweaks are OK and even a gray pair of the same style pants but no prison looking gray combos like one of his former teams wears.

I like the hire but the position comes with a lot of expectations and pressure. I grew up watching Clemson baseball, lived at Tiger Field while I was a student, have seen them in Omaha and make as many trips as possible to Kingsmore and to road games now plus retirement is only a few years away and I plan on living there again. My family has some connections to his family and I hope he is successful but I really don't want to see something that has been great for over half a century get screwed up.I support him 110% because I support all things Clemson 110% and I really think he is going to be great. Here's to a long hall of fame career as a Tiger. Go Tigers!!!

Post season 95% of his tenure

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Next year will be rough considering the pitching we lose

Jun 18, 2015, 5:42 PM

Crownover and Erwin are gone, which leaves a gaping hole in our pitching game. Lee needs at least 2-3 years to build some QUALITY depth there.

Sorry I got on the wrong thread

Jun 18, 2015, 6:22 PM

I thought this was about expectations not excuses. If he can't go above .500 and make a regional we made the wrong hire. Sorry but this sounds like "well I screamed to get him so let's make excuses now because I'm not sure we made a good hire." Sorry but this is Clemson and we expect to win! Make no mistake about it. He is going to make more than double is old salary and with that comes higher expectations.

Re: Reasonable expecations for Lee?

Jun 18, 2015, 5:48 PM

You're kidding right. Year 2, why not year one? I'd say year 1, ncaa tournament. Year 2, host regional, year 3, win acc host regional and #1 seed in Omaha. We have to have high expectations. You don't win without them.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I am going to judge him, not so much the first year or so,..

Jun 18, 2015, 5:56 PM

on wins and losses, but how the team plays in terms of defense, swinging the bat (not taking a first ball strike over the middle of the plate, swinging at a ball, out of the zone, and them watching a third strike on the corner), base running, etc. Basically watching how he coaches the fundamentals of the game. If all of that improves, then the W-l record will reflect that.

Next year will be ugly.... I expect another decline next year but then a start of the reversing of the trend in year 2...

Return in NCAAs in year 2.

Supers in year 3/4

Competing for ACC year 5. Along with Supers/Omaha

and improved fundamentals, but lack of pitching holds us back and we don't make tourney. Years 2 and 3, get a 2 seed in a regional and make Super regional in year 3. year 4, host regional and Super and go to Omaha> Regular hosting of regional returns after that.
