Was the offensive gameplan too cautious?

Sep 30, 2019, 9:31 AM

UNCs DC impressively shut down OUs offense last year. Do you think our gameplan was purposely vanilla and cautious so that he could not give the blueprint on how to stop our offense? We didnt put much on tape, very few new wrinkles. If he could shut down OU and Murray with Army, he is capable of shutting down any offense. Was this a case of survive and get out without showing anything?

Don't know... he didn't do a great job of shutting down

I thought we were impatient and refused to run the ball...

Sep 30, 2019, 9:40 AM

Now some of that was due to false start penalties.

Which is another thing. How annoying is it that our OL has to sit in their stance for like 20 seconds before we snap the ball?

I guess we don't want them guessing the snap count, but good lord... just snap the ball.

It looked pretty much like every other

September game plan to me...with two exceptions:
1. We ran a double-stack formation once...got a first down
2. The screen to Overton that the turf monster won! Interesting 12th man UNC have there...stealthy.

Otherwise, it was the same as the past four Septembers.

Except when TL got hurt and we just let ETN win the game for

us against Syracuse.

In the 3rd quarter, ETN ran for 2 yds, 9 yds, and 5 yds.

That's all. Nothing in the 4th. (of course UNC had ball for the last 8 minutes.)

That's better than 5 yards per carry. He should be given the ball more.

That was Powell, not Overton

Overton would have gotten a first down and a lot more on that play. Amari Rodgers probably would have scored. Why we would ever, EVER throw it to Powell with the game still in question is beyond my comprehension.

I think when you run a slip out play like that it helps to throw the ball to a guy who typically is not focused on by the defense.

I think the fact that it was Powell helped the play be that open.

Unfortunately, he metaphorically dropped the ball on his chance and literally tripped all over himself.

I would love to see that play run in the future to Dixon.

He isn't a focal point for a defense when they see an ETN run fake going the other way, and he (or Amari) would likely be our top choice in open field to make one or two guys miss for a huge play.

I like your thoughts on our offense. It appeared to me that Dabo was more involved
in the play calling, against one of his mentors, than Scott.

But they did shut down our offense. With a lot of help from our o line.

Yes. Early movement penalties, fumble at our 42 and several high throws by Trevor squelched any momentum. Just not sharp. Hopefully an extra week of practice helps.

No...the team just played like ****

That said, it's a good day when you show-up with your C game and still come away with a win.

To me it seemed more like a case of them knowing exactly what we were running based on formation and motion and personnel. Great scouting - the very thing we always appreciate about Coach V. Seemed like most balls Trevor threw were to bracketed receivers and the result was he ended holding it longer or trying to put it in a high window. That’s just good D. At that point we have to be able to lean on a nasty, veteran O Line to run it down their throats. We weren’t good enough to do that consistently so we had fewer possessions, fewer long drives and fewer chunk plays. Just comes down to football instead of the video games we’ve been playing.

Could be. Didnt dabo say at halftime that they were being a little more conservative? I said yesterday that after rewatching the game it seemed the coaches purposely wanted to put us in a 4th quarter situation to see how we would respond. Just my opinion from watching Dabos reactions on the sideline on Saturday compared to how he usually reacts during close games. He just seemed really calm and didnt go after a player and yell at them when they made a mistake like he use to. It could just have been something to do with that contract he signed during the offseason so he didnt feel as much pressure to win.
