Walt was talking 1981 vs 2016 or 2018 yesterday

Jun 22, 2019, 8:35 AM

One of the comparisons was wide receiver and the fact that Perry Tuttle averaged 16.9 yds/catch and the receivers on the last two NC teams average was lower. I did not get to listen to the whole discussion but did not hear anyone mention the fact that the defensive backs were playing only 5-7 yards deep trying to stop the run.
There were not 7 in the box but 11. This created an opportunity for receivers to break coverage quickly and get longer YAC. Another difference during this time period was that defenses played 3 DB's most of the time and added a linebacker or lineman to stop the run. Also now there are defenses with 5-6 DBs to stop the pass.
I think it is impossible to compare the WRs from these two different eras of football.

Passing back then was almost like Georgia Tech under Pawl Johnson. Danny's offense was definitely predicated on "three yards and a cloud of dust". And we were very good at it. So, when we did throw it, those plays usually went for nice yards. It was not uncommon for us to have 13 play drives that consumed a lot of time. I remember one game where we consumed an entire quarter with two drives, both ending in touchdowns, without throwing the ball at all. Kinda like the last drive in the last Natty, except we didn't sit on it at the end like we did against Bama. Given what has transpired since that game in the media, I bet we don't sit on it next time, we score.

Really hard to compare teams back then because the game has changed so much. A good discussion for sports talk anyway

The 81 team caught fire in a bottle. It was a great team, but the talent level does not compare to the teams that Dabo is fielding now. Honestly the 81 team is not even the best team that Ford had if you look at it strictly from talent level

'81 was a dream year the way it all fell together........

Remember Dan Marino and Pitt lost to Penn State in last game of season to go 10-1. With a win they are 11-0 and probably get the Orange Bowl spot over of the Tigers.

Magical in deed.......

I think I counted 22 players on that team (1981) that went on to play professional football. We very well may have that many off our last championship team, but comparing teams from different eras is difficult.

Another fact about the yards per catch is that in 1981 when Clemson threw the football it was for 8-10 yards min. Danny would not throw until he was behind the chains.
