Richmond and the Tidewater area of Virginia are super important to VT in terms of recruiting and alumni support. VA is a very wide and narrow state where Blacksburg seems like a world away from the coast. Playing in this area brings exposure and helps VT in several areas. Looks bad on paper but is a very smart move

= 1 for imaginative use of the descriptor, " very wide and narrow "

Maybe so

But I don’t see how playing on the road in a tiny stadium makes you more appealing to any top-tier players,

At one point in the Beamer era VT owned HS recruiting in the Tidewater area .
Hampton , Newport News , Portsmouth , Norfolk , Chesapeake , Virginia Beach and Suffolk produce a ton of D-1 talent ... each year . This is more of a recruiting reminder I think . They benefit from showing that the Hokies are still an option outside of Bama. Clemson and Ohio State ... teams that have had success cherry picking the Tidewaters elite talent o er the last 5 years or so .
I think they're doing it to bolster an image with these kids who were looking past Blacksburg and Charlottesville .

Tajh Boyd sends his regards to VT.

I saw where this was one of the most expensive tickets of the season in top 5 or 10 on Stubhub

Mainly because limited seats and so many Hokie fans in the area. I thought about making the short drive from Richmond as I have a second degree from VT but not paying those prices.
