Van Smith

Finally created an account with Tigernet (for some reason for the last 8 years I never realized making an account was free... ). That being said, I was wondering if anyone else noticed the poor angles Van Smith took on BOTH of Dalvin Cook's long runs. Has he been doing this all year and it was just exposed Saturday, or did he just have an off night?

Love Boulware's moxy, toughness, grit, heart and beard but hate that he can't cover a receiver or tight end on routes.

My take

There were a few folks who took bad angles on those runs. We've had an aggressive style all year that has, against most backs, been quite successful. We've had a good record of making those tackles two yards behind the LOS, but Cook is a different back. Give him a bit of daylight and he can make you pay (and he did).
It also helped that their tackles were allowed to move a good half second before the snap for much of the game.
But hats off to Cook, he's a great back and I'm ready to see him leave FSU

I'm glad someone else noticed that. They called a lot of FS on FSU but they also missed on most of them. That one 3rd and long I was like "up false start. Bring it back" then I never saw a flag and I about flipped my dang table. FSU can complain about officiating but they were bad on both sides.

There were a lot of false starts not called. That TD drive with the false start I almost lost it.

I haven't noticed it at any other time during the season. With that said I think it has more to do with Cooks "deceptive" speed.
Cook is a beast, and I think Smith just misjudged how much of a beast he is.

Yep Cook is just quicker than most expect and he showed us how good he is. Not much Van Smith could do. You take away the outside and he will cut it up the middle. This is what happens when you blitz up the middle alot and leave your guys on the outside one on one with Cook if he gets the corner. We did lose containment but that is easy to do against Cook. Gotta give the back credit. He is the best in that nation. I love our Wayne Train though!

You can point to a number of things, like DEs not setting the edge and DBs not shedding blocks on the perimeter.

Boulware (unexpectedly) got blown up too. Didn't look like Clemson defense to me, and I imagine Coach V will be a little upset about it this week in practice
Losing Jadar was a hit to the safeties. Wiggins didn't show up too much - he may be a step slower after coming back? You can bet we'll see that counter again, and I'm thinking we'll be coached up by then.
In a similar point, Fields needs to learn to fight harder and get off blocks.

I think Van got caught cheating up to the line to help stop the run, then had to chase from behind. He's not going to catch Cook from behind. I like the aggressive nature of this defense. Give credit to Cook. He just ran around the defensive end, linebacker, and cb on that side.

Boulware I don't think took bad angle on either play. 1st long one he was on the other side from the run. 2nd one he for the gap outside of the tackle.
Van on both runs got too far inside and missed filling the gap outside of the LB.
Watching the game again yesterday my take was both would have probably been stopped by Van if he fot the outside gaps.
