Van Smith

Feb 17, 2016, 10:33 AM

I don't know what it is about him but ever since I watched him and Kaleb Chalmers playing on the 7vs7 NC Elite team I've had a good feeling about this guy. When he had his coming out party at Miami he just gave flashes of one of the next greats. I whole heartedly believe this kid will be special.

I hope you're right

Feb 17, 2016, 10:36 AM

We'll need him to step up. I think he will.

I think Van and jadar will be the starting safties in the start of fall camp maybe split reps with korrin wiggins if they leave him at saftey.

A healthy Korrin Wiggins will push them all.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Can he play cornerback? He looks too small to be a safety,

Feb 17, 2016, 10:47 AM

but, with his physicality, he'd make a good cornerback that can come up and tackle.

This will be our top 5 (including nickle position) in the secondary next year:

Tankersley
Wiggins
Johnson
Fields
Baker

Not sure exactly where each will end up.

Everyone continues to forget Muse.

Not me. Really like him, but he's just a freshman. It's

Feb 17, 2016, 11:15 AM

going to take him awhile to gain Venable's trust given that safeties are our last line of defense.

I know he can play corner but he was used as saftey all last year and he seem to lay the wood on almost anyone he hit. The dude can cover well and has an eye for the ball.

6'2" 190 lbs good enough to play safety. He can tackle well.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

He's more like 5' 10" or 5' 11" at most.

Feb 17, 2016, 11:38 AM

he got run over a few times.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I hope his tackling improves from last year. At times it was putrid.***

He's listed 6'2" by a few different sites

Those are corners you never listed safeties. Plus I think the Simmons kid out of Kansas will push for early playing time. I think he's too good.

after Miami I dont recall him doing much the rest of the way even though he got more pt. Maybe I am forgetting something

He had four tackles against wake forest and then had six tackles against north Carolina. And then a couple tackles sprinkled here and there in-between.

I'm glad to see you finally posting about something other than cam newton. Go back to where you belong coot. This is a Clemson fans I know you have a hard time reading but I'll sound it out with you this is a CLEM-SON website not a GAME-COOT. Hope I was able to help

Re: Van Smith

Feb 17, 2016, 12:48 PM

players in the mix for each position

Field
Cordrea Tankersley
- closest thing to a lock in the secondary
- elite length, great speed help lock down the large side of field

Boundary
Adrian Baker
- started in Mac's place vs Wake
- made 2 of our secondary's biggest plays this year
- question marks as a tackler, still needs to add weight
- didn't play vs UNC or OU. was he injured? or just doesn't fit the nickel role?
- probably a better fit as a field corner but the opening is here
Mark Fields
- highly rated, saw meaningful time down the stretch with Baker injury
- has the physique you want in a boundary, not afraid of contact
- boundary corner of the future, hope he can win the job now

Nickel
Ryan Carter
- started vs UNC and Oklahoma logging 109 snaps between the two games
- Martin Jenkins type of quick twitch small corner in the slot
- will be a contributor but game to game will depend on opponent scheme
Korrin Wiggins
- would be option #1 here if his move to safety wasn't already in the works pre-injury
- best combination of size/coverage ability
- if BV wants to build the defense around the nickel, then Wiggins starts here
Dorian O'Daniel/Chad Smith
- linebacker depth/flexibility allows BV to stay in 4-3 base
- Travis Blanks was forced into this role last year; either player increases athleticism here
- now that BV has a stable of linebackers lets see how he uses them
Tanner Muse
- perfect place to put someone you're worried about growing out into a LB from a safety
- if he shows a knack for nickel, we may want to keep him here exclusively going forward
- imagine his frame as a run stopper that can run with TEs, potential is huge

Safety
Korrin Wiggins
- much greater position than nickel in terms of both depth and scheme
- 200+ snaps at safety as a freshman, 500+ at nickel as a sophomore
- might not be his best position, but it's a position that needs him
- if Van Smith is responsible enough and Muse doesn't outgrow safety, nickel may be best
Jadar Johnson
- now or never for Jadar Johnson
- trailed Jayron since he got on campus which isn't a knock at all
- coverage safety which may be desired with Boulware, Lamar, LB corps eating the run up
Van Smith
- "showed out" against Miami but only logged 16 snaps
- missed tackles down the stretch but athletically he's a hit
- made it onto the field on talent alone, now it's up to scheme digestion whether he sticks
Tanner Muse
- think he outgrows safety eventually, but for 2016 will be relied on for depth
- big safety who can come up in the box to give the offense confusing looks

versatility in the secondary makes this the most exciting group for me to follow through spring practice and into the fall

Re: Van Smith

Feb 17, 2016, 3:14 PM

I pretty sure by only logging 16 snaps in the miami game and having a team leading six tackles and an interception is what I like to call "showed out"

Re: Van Smith

Feb 17, 2016, 4:23 PM

It's also completely unsustainable and most likely a case of luck. I want Van Smith to be a star but don't see him as a starter this year

Re: Van Smith

I respect your opinion brotha but I just think with this off season he will crack the two deep for sure and can see him starting but that's just my opinion

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Dorian O'Daniel

Feb 17, 2016, 2:34 PM

He also looked impressive during the Miami game.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

The Miami game gave a lot of guys a chance to play

Feb 17, 2016, 4:36 PM

I hope we can have a few more this year for the next group
