UVA about 6-7 years ago ALMOST axed their baseball program

Jun 26, 2015, 7:27 PM

because of poor teams and little fan support. They have gone from the brink of existence to the top of the college baseball world. During this same period our team has gone in the opposite direction. I'm looking forward to better days with the full Monte.

Might want to review your sources and check your facts, they have been in NCAA TOURNAMENT every year since Brian O'Conner got there in 2004.

It was longer than 6-7 years, but the rest is totally true.

Never let the facts get in the way of a good piece of BS. ;)

It was 2000. Virginia did financial projections on non-revenue sports and came back with the recommendation of axing baseball. The higher ups decided that it was important to their overall rankings to keep baseball. They then decided if they were going to keep it they should invest the money to be good.

Writer John Grisham saved the baseball team with a very large donation to the team. He lives in Charlottesville and is a big baseball fan. Without his donation they don't have the program they do today.

kinda like how Boyd Tinsley have them a huge donation

to upgrade tennis facilities, a sport they were also going to axe. And now they haven't lost an ACC match since 2007 and have won two national titles and been national runner up 2 more times since 2007.

UVA never had plans to cut tennis. As another poster said, UVA did a major review of every aspect of their university in 2000. In the Athletics review they proposed tiering their sports teams. The athletic department totally rejected that and decided to go all in, in all sports. The only sports that the commission proposed cutting were baseball and indoor men's track. Tennis was put on tier 3 (the lowest level).
