UPDATE: Made this for my Father-In-Law for Father's Day.
Sep 26, 2016, 11:08 AM
|
|
A while back I posted a photo of a tiger paw wall hanging I made for my father-in-law. There was a good bit of positive response from TigerNet, and I decided to try to go through the process and try to get them officially licensed.
It got approved and is now officially licensed by Clemson University!
The white wood is reclaimed barn wood harvested in Greenville, SC, close to the Furman University campus. I like the weathered white look, but some people have wanted to see the paw in orange. Also, I am experimenting with layouts and have done a rectangle and square.
Here is the original:
Here they are in rectangle and square formats:
And here is a sample of what a light dusting of orange would look like:
I would love to hear your thoughts and any ideas you have that would help make these paws better.

If your looking for opinions...
I would like to see one with the natural frame, an orange dusted background and see the paw with puttied nail holes painted white. I just think that may help your awesome jig work stand out a little more.

So you would have an orange background with white paw?
I like it.

Absolutely gorgeous!!!!!
Just a question to you. If we were to order one, can we supply the material(wood) to make it? We have some 100 year old plank oak that came from my father-in-law's property(barn and corn crib) and is very similar to what you have displayed in TNet.

So orange on both? Or just in the background?

My favorite layout is your new rectangular one. I gives

a little more space above and below the paw, and still has enough space on either side of the paw. However, I would definitely prefer that you go back to mitering the corners. I think the mitered corner looks much better.

Thanks for that. It helps knowing that you like the corners mitered.

Any chance you could make a smaller version? I'd love something like that hanging on my front door.

What size are you thinking? Typically, the smaller they get, the harder the cuts are to make. We can try it though.

Try a sample with Benjamin Moore or Pittsburg semi solid...

Do not buy the cheap crap from Home Depot or Lowes.
Orange Paw, White background or frame and Purple background or frame.
Put it on with a brush and immediately wipe it off with a dry rag.

Sounds good. So far I have tried a diluted wash with chalk paint. Will try your technique also.

If you decide on staining the entire piece three different..

colors you may want to stain them before construction. I'd suggest you cut the trim then stain it. Jointed corners will suck up stain and become darker than the faces due to there being no way to wipe the stain from within the joint.
If the stain appears too strong for good taste try thinning it. Of course you want to do your trials on scraps left from your cutting table.

Thanks and wonderful piece. How much for one like you made for Father in Law? I did like the idea. Natural square frame, dusted orange background and white paw
How large is the one you did first?
Would love to see if I could get one.

Some might want vintage, some might want it to pop. I definitely agree with corners and the rectangle, looks like a big wall frame. I'd be interested to see the dusted orange background with the natural white wood. But I like the very orange paw too, can't go wrong with more orange. Congrats on the license
