Touchdown at Georgia Tech.

Why did they only give Clemson 2 points? And why did Georgia Tech have to kick off to us?

Is this Swoford's fault or was it Ron Cherry?

They took the ball out of the EZ, then fumbles it back in. That's a safety. And after a safety, you punt the ball back to the other team.

When GA Tech intercepted the ball, they essentially became the team on offense. If the guy that caught the ball had simply stayed in the end zone and taken a knee, it would have been a touchback, just like a punt or kickoff that goes into the end zone. It would've been GA Tech's ball at their own 20. However, the ball carrier came out of the end zone. Just like a runner that returns a kickoff or punt out of the endzone, the ball will be spotted at the yard line where he is tackled or goes out of bounds.
Well, the ball was fumbled and rolled backwards, across the goal line, into the end zone. Remember, the jackets are now on offense, so to speak. They're now backed up into their own end zone. If Clemson had jumped on the fumbled ball, they would've regained possession- touchdown Tigers. However, GA Tech fell on the ball, thus resulting in a safety and 2 points for Clemson. After a safety, the team that was scored against must kick the ball from the 20 to the opponents. It's football's version of "make it, take it."
Needless to say, a brief moment of heroism quickly morphed into a momentous gaffe. Go Tigers
