Top Baseball Recruit Asks For Release

Jun 9, 2015, 5:00 PM

One of Clemson's top baseball recruits, catcher Cal Raleigh, has asked to be released from his NLI. For those of you who don't follow college baseball, Raleigh's dad, Todd, is the former head coach at Western Carolina and Tennessee. He played for Leggett at Western. He was also the head coach at Tennessee when Bradley Lecroy was the recruiting coordinator there. Apparently Lecroy's connection to Raleigh was not enough to persuade him to come to Clemson without Leggett here.

you baseball experts are ready for what is about to happen. You don't release a coach like Leggett
and hope that the baseball team will immediately become a national powerhouse.. This is the most stupid decision made at Clemson in years. I knew that GT would get even with us for sending Robinson to Atlanta!!!

I personally know guys who played for coach L and he IS NOT a guy that you dismiss the way it was done.

Are you kidding? He should have been fired last year! We could not stand to have another year in 2016 like the past three! Leggett had every chance to straighten things out and HE DID NOT! Just in fundamentals this year's team was even worse than the past several! That simply could NOT go on! Good coaches do NOT let that happen!

Who thinks we will instantly become a national powerhouse in baseball? Stop making crap up to fit your argument.

We haven't been a powerhouse in baseball since at least 2007. During that time frame, we have one division championship, zero conference championships, one visit to the CWS, two visits to the Super Regionals, and hosted a regional and Super once (in a year where we didn't even host a regional). We have ONE game in our last three tournament appearances. That is not a powerhouse program.

Jack Leggett was and maybe still is a great coach, but it just wasn't working anymore. It possibly could have been handled better, but no one here was in those meetings. Hopefully, the next hire will prove to be great in the long run or maybe not, but I would rather take that chance than what we have had the last 5 years (a continually declining program).

spiral, lack of wins and lack of championships. And I watched Leggett since I was young. These aren't the same teams in the last 5 years that his once were.

What? The more Leggett I supporters share, the more I think

Jun 9, 2015, 6:59 PM [ in reply to I hope that ]

it was time to part ways.

Leggett did not make Clemson baseball. Clemson Baseball made Leggett.

Leggett should be thanking Clemson as much as we should be thanking him. He was paid well and supported well by fans and the AD.

The sour grapes from his camp sure do make me wonder -especially when combined with his demeanor and alleged stubbornness.

Re: I hope that

Jun 9, 2015, 8:18 PM [ in reply to I hope that ]

there were 2 choices...either release the coach now and not get another year behind, which would have made the same thing happen next year with recruits. Or he would have had to be given a contract extension to be able to recruit and if things did not improve then you have a bigger buy-out. If the coach has one year left, then it would be the same thing because the kids still would not know who their coach was going to be after 1 year.

You also don't keep a coach that has gone downhill is the last several years and, as you say, HOPE that the baseball team will immediately become a national powerhouse. If he had been retained and nothing improved again, you are right back where we are right now. Jack has had plenty of time to improve and did not.

Let's say you were the top salesman in your company for years and received numerous awards for your work. Then you start slipping yr after yr. Your boss does your evaluation at the end of the year and tells you that you have one year to improve. At your next evaluation there is no improvement. Your boss does exactly what he said he was going to do and releases you from the company. The boss hires another salesman to take your place, but completely understands that it will take him a while to get to know the company and set up his own clients and to regain the one's you had lost. That sounds fair to me.

Me, you, nor anyone knows what happened in that meeting with JL and Drad. Only 2 people know that. Now people can assume that it happened one way or the other, but still, nobody knows what was said.

I think you are right about one thing. There may be a down right rocky year or two. Letting Jack go was a means to prevent further deterioration. The hope is that the desert wandering just doesn't last too long.

3rd winningest coach in Clemson football history, never had a losing record, and only missed the postseason once.

Sounds pretty familiar.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: He was here for a decade...

Jun 10, 2015, 4:49 AM

He's actually 10th by winning percentage yet had the 3rd longest tenure of any coach so no, your analogy doesn't really hold any water. Tommy was actually kept around too long which the only reason he has those total wins.
