Top 5 Tiger Football Teams of ALL-TIMES

May 17, 2014, 11:25 AM

Having been born in 1990, I will not delve into this question for fear of ignorance. Obviously, of the seasons I vividly remember, I would have to rank the 2013 team number one on my list.

Your list can be based on potential, actual achievements, chemistry, etc. and anecdotes about those particular seasons will be welcomed. What say ye?

I've followed the Tigers since the '50s; I consider the '78 and '81 teams to be better overall. Can't speak to the Heisman undefeated team or early Howard squads.

"What say ye?"

I say that to rate top five the team should win the conference championship. SHOULD

1-1981
2-1978
3-1900
4-1948
5-1939

The last squad was 2nd in the Southern Conference but/and was a stellar team.

I know you're probably sincere about the question posed

May 17, 2014, 12:40 PM

in your post, but, realistically, this list would have to include teams that played when MY great-grandfather was alive and you only have 14-15 years of experience to draw on. And I don't mean that to sound critical. Unlike usuck, Clemson football has enjoyed tremendously successful seasons dating back to the turn of the 20th century.

What you should really do is a lot of reading and research into Clemson football via the many avenues available (and not just google or Wikipedia) and come back and tell us which were the Top 5 teams in Clemson history. I believe the more investigating you do, the more you'll enjoy the effort. And without a doubt, you'll be amazed at what you'll learn. A great place to begin is to drop by, call or email Tim Bourret to get a list of sources.

Good luck!

Specify in my post that I am ignorant considering my age and

that I will refrain from offering a list myself, then get called out for being ignorant. Welcome to T-NET. Not sure whether your criticism to research wiki/google was a shot at me being an armchair fan, but my assertion that the 2013 team was the best in my memory was based on attending all but 7 home games from 1990-2013 as well as being an IPTAY member since 2006 (my sophomore year in high school). Interesting that you took the time (two full paragraphs, actually) to shine a light on my limited knowledge of the entirety of the Clemson football program's history yet refrained from offering a list yourself. It's called an open discussion.

kinda hard to compare since we don't have people alive from the whole duration of the football program, but i'll take my stab at it:

1) 1981 - no questions
2) 1978 - start of several special seasons to follow
3) 1939 - put Clemson in the spotlight on a national level
4) 1982 - never know how high the Tigers could've finished had they been allowed to play in a bowl game that year
5) 1948 - only other team to finish year unbeaten/untied was Michigan

1939 Cotton Bowl (first bowl), 1948 (undefeated won bowl game), 1950 (undefeated and beat Miami in Orange Bowl), along with some of the later teams.

The best group of players we ever had was the 1989 squad.

May 17, 2014, 1:41 PM

Hands down. Obviously, the best "Team" we had was 1981-82.

The 1989 squad was the most talented group of players ever at Clemson. They screwed around and let Duke and GT beat them. This may be sacreligious, but Danny really screwed up that season. He should have been in the National title.

As one who was there in 1948 and 1950 I think you have to include those teams.

1. 1981 12-0 National Champs.

2. 1948 11-0

3. 1978 11-1 ACCs 1st time since '67.

4. 1990 10-2 #1 defense in nation. Would have been 12-0 if they'd kept Danny Ford.

5. 1939 9-1 Won the Cotton Bowl.

Born in '61. '84 alum. All Ford teams IMHO.

May 17, 2014, 6:02 PM

Dabo D could not have stopped Rodney Williams, the tailbacks and other running Offenses. Ford D's completely dominant.
