Isn't that sort of what is about to happen with Tom Herman?
Isn't some school about to pay Herman mega bucks because he's had one good year at a lower level?
Tell me why Tom Herman looks any better now than Tommy Bowden did in 1999 ...

Bowden came directly from Tulane. Tu freaking lane.
Not saying it was a bad hire. Bowden was what we needed at that time. He got us as far as he could get us. Worked out fine.

I think people tend to forget how bad of shape our program was in before Bowden got here. He did a lot to rebuild our program. He just wasn't able to get us to the elite level. Bowden was a GOOD coach; He just wasn't a GREAT coach.

Took Houston recruiting who was ranked 90 last year to 37 this year. I don't think he goes to the Coots though. Houston just offered him 3 mil a year to stay.

Rich Rod as an OC, Shawn King at QB and Bowden as a last name. Very average coach.

Easy. Tommy Bowden had Rich Rod who made him look good. Herman just has himself and it's all him.

His success at Tulane plus his name which was supported by both his father and brother. At that time, folks were picking up any of the crumbs Papa Bowden allowed to fall and Bowden was a name which could open recruiting avenues for both players and assistants all over the country.
Fact is, he was a good hire who reached his potential.

absolutely the most lost looking coach on the sidelines on game day I have ever seen. When things went south during a game, neither he, nor his staff ever seemed to have a way to right the ship.
The fact that our current staff with Dabo in charge can make these same live game time adjustments and win those kinds of games (ala Louisville / Fla State this year) is the single biggest glaring difference between the two eras. (Recruiting quality players everywhere, not just the skill positions, is another.)
