Tim Tebow crushing First Take this morning

Nov 1, 2019, 11:47 AM

Talking about a “holistic approach” and “student athlete first” when talking about the players being paid for likeness. He gave Dabo as his first example for this “holistic approach”. Really impressed by how he’s put this. Probably the best media statement I’ve heard so far.

A holistic approach doesn’t put the athlete first, it puts the university first. 30 years ago a college scholarship was a decent piece of the pie compared to what the university was raking in, now it’s chump change. If Dabo wants to treat athletes like students he should be treated like a professor and be paid at most a couple hundred thousand a year instead of millions.

But this isn’t even the issue because university’s are not going to be paying athletes. This is simply allowing an adult to make money off of their own name and I don’t see how anybody can tell them they can’t.

CONTRACT between a student athlete and an NCAA accredited university, smart guy. There are rules in place to keep the recruiting playing field as level as possible. NO player of ANY sport is above that contract or the university and the rules set forth therein. None of these guys face or name would be worth SQUAT without the notoriety afforded them BY THE UNIVERSITY and the sport they chose to use as a vehicle to PROFESSIONAL success. They aren't entitle to a #### thing outside of what they already get, which btw is worth $400k +, not to mention the degree, the shot at playing in the NFL to make ridiculous money, the TV time, and the fame and accolades.

Question? How many on this board would not have happily played football for Clemson in exchange for not having student debt?

As well as all the benefits afforded to you during your college days and beyond.

Mind you I totally agree with a stipend for spending money as these kids cannot get a part time job.

I have no problem with paying them for their likeness if it could be kept fair. It cannot. Thus, it will eventually the downfall of college football/ and hurt college athletics.

If it goes the way we think it will with the big money schools with big endorsement opportunities getting all the big name players, will you continue to watch?

I will not even just out of protest.

Nov 1, 2019, 12:59 PM [ in reply to Re: Tim Tebow crushing First Take this morning ]

You are correct that a holistic approach does not put the athlete (singular) first.

A holistic approach is a way of thinking where an entire group is considered.

It means he wants rules that benefit and work for all athletes and not the 1% who could make money from the new rule suggestions.

It means he wants a system that works at all levels.

Everybody talks about how the football and basketball players "deserve" better.

How about the other athletes whose sports don't even get worthwhile scholarships?

Baseball gets 11.7 scholarships for 35 roster spots. That means on average they are 66% more in the hole than a football or basketball player at the same school who is begging for more money.

Maybe we should fully fund more sports before we start to try to take care of the top 1% of college athletes.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Tim Tebow crushing First Take this morning

Nov 1, 2019, 1:31 PM

It’s not the 1%’s fault that they are better and have more opportunities to make money off of their OWN NAME.

Comparing this to other sports is irrelevant. None of the other sports generate the revenue that football does so it’s a totally different situation.

Why should the coaches and AD’s get filthy rich while the players get nothing but a scholarship that they may or may not turn into a career?

I’m not devaluing the scholarship. It’s worth something but like I said it’s nothing compared to the millions these coaches are paid today.

Re: I actually can't stand Bernie, but let me take a crack...

Nov 2, 2019, 7:55 AM

I don’t have a problem with a deal where an amateur athlete gets a 100% paid degree(which is nearly impossible to get for non athletes) training table meals, tutoring, advanced coaching and a college experience in exchange for your best athletic efforts. When we exit that deal and enter pay or remuneration based on fair market value then we remove amateur from the equation. At that point we should probably just have football minor leagues that feed nfl rosters right out of high school. My question is which is better for the individual athlete? Their current status or a life similar to a minor league baseball player?

Re: Tim Tebow crushing First Take this morning

Nov 1, 2019, 2:30 PM [ in reply to Re: Tim Tebow crushing First Take this morning ]

Asking why coaches get filthy rich is like asking why NFL players get filthy rich while their college teammates have to go find jobs doing something else.

The coaches get filthy rich because they are a small percentage of applicants who have worked their way up and perfected what they do enough to be considered elite status.

Also the 1% aren't necessarily better but they are more marketable. A first round offensive linemen will still be less marketable than even Lyn J Dixon as a backup RB just because of position. Also Dixon will be making money partly off of the linemen as well.

Also you say comparing to other sports is not irrelevant because you claim that the athletes should get more because they are "better". There are better and more elite athletes in non-revenue sports across the country who won't benefit from this simply because they are playing a sport that is less marketed or because any money made will have to go toward tuition.

Track, tennis, golf, and baseball are just naming a few of the sports that create new millionaires every year. Their time in college is keeping them from those careers. Why is it that they don't deserve money in their pocket while in school?

A third string football player needs to go to school for free AND make some money on top of it while a Seth Beer leaves school $80,000 in debt?

Please make an argument for why that makes sense.

Nov 2, 2019, 10:40 AM [ in reply to Re: Tim Tebow crushing First Take this morning ]

Isn’t really fair. Let’s say there are 10 coaches. There are 100 players.

The players are amateurs. The coaches are professionals.

The student athletes are kind of like interns. Some of them will go on to to make millions playing. Some in coaching. Some of them will make a good living because of their name (Tahj Boyd). Some of them will provide an upper middle class lifestyle for their families with their degree. Like many normal folks here on the board.

Being a scholarship athlete is an incredibly valuable platform to launch a career.

Football is a team sport and requires the total effort of every player. However, it is the star players that get the praise. By star players I refer to the QB, ERs and RBs. How many OL and DL players receive similar praise? How would this affect the play of the other players who make some players stars but do not share in the wealth? Could this lead to a team morale problem? I have no idea what the final rules and regulations will entail but it appears to me we have opened a can of worms that could possibly lead to a ton of abuses.

Nov 2, 2019, 11:01 AM [ in reply to Re: Tim Tebow crushing First Take this morning ]

Even if you are a walk on or player that doesn’t get much playing time, you are still pretty #### good and are still a big deal to many young kids. Those players can show up to youth sports camps and things like that and get paid for putting them name on them or making an appearance. They may not make as much as the 1%, but there are still going to be many avenues for the lesser players to make money with the new rule.

You guys can be angry with tin cup but that doesn’t make his point (On this subject) any less valid. He is exactly right on the point of Dabo (and any college coach) being paid like a professor, if that’s how you want to treat the athletes. You can try and spin the amateurism of collegiate athletics any way you want but the reality is that the revenue produced by college football has increased drastically over the years. The ones who drive that revenue have seen no real benefit from it. I’m not saying there is a perfect answer but I do find it interesting that the same ones who oppose these athletes getting any kind of compensation are the same ones who would be completely against a socialist economy. College athletes (especially football and basketball players) are handcuffed when it comes to making extra money. It’s absolutely absurd. Stop with the arguments of “keeping recruiting fair”. Get over yourself and your self righteous view of NCAA football. These kids deserve more than what they are getting. Maybe it should be in the form of 401k’s or something similar to help these young athletes work on long term wealth and saving for the future. Flame away snowflakes!

You know who drives the revenue? The fans. They pay the cable bills, the ticket prices, concessions and parking and try to send their non-athletic kids to the schools they pull for. Players are all replaceable and interchangeable - see the transfer portal. The fans love the uniform and the campus and this new model will bleed another 20-25% fan participation off the already declining attendance. Eventually college sports will just become studio sports only designed to fill TV content needs. Like the dead NFL.

You lost all credibility once you called the NFL dead. There is no measurement, save for small college town TV ratings where the college football is outdoing the NFL. The reason some fans like college football better is because of their ties to the school. The product is better, the athletes aren't better. The coaches aren't better. The TV ratings aren't better. Maybe you are one of those people who believe that watching unpaid players who are far less talented but play "for the love of the game" is a better. NFL ratings are still at unbelievable highs.

Can you please share what source you are using to justify stating the NFL is dead?

NFL is dead as far as stadium experience. It exists as a studio to create TV product/content. I would hazard to guess (because they don’t release statistics on actual fans in the seats) that NFL attendance league wide is below 50%. All I have are my eyes to get a glimpse of most stadiums when you get a slightly wider shot. They do their best not to show the entire stadium to hide that fact. They do still have good TV ratings mostly out of habit and calendar spot - Sunday afternoons as the days get shorter and colder. Notice they backed away from Pinktober and anthem protest guidelines? They saw the 10% decline in ratings and decided wokeness was hurting their product.

Tebow is the only talking head talking about academics and education.

Everyone else I've heard, espn and other networks, gives either zero or just barely passing reference to anything dealing with "college."

Golic and Wingo, with Tebow on it, this morning were discussing it. Golic, Golic and Wingo tired to say they understood Tebow talking about academics and education, but it was clearly mere pandering. After Tebow left, they were essentially mocking academic requirements.

They were not at all impressed when Tebow mentioned that Auburn football players get $6000 per year for "cost of attendance."

Re: Tim Tebow crushing First Take this morning

Nov 2, 2019, 2:44 AM

Very interesting read at 2:33 am as I can’t sleep. Couple of points.

Tim Tebow has made more money than 99.9% of college football players over the last 2 decades and it wasn’t on the field. It was bc he could cash in on his own name, image & likeness.

Many on here have mentioned that the fans drive the revenue that the schools and NCAA bring in every year. Let’s say that is true. As a fan I would personally rather see more of that money go to the athletes versus the ncaa. Or bring the cost of attendance of games and watching on tv down. It’s getting out of control.

Many have talked about the value of a scholarship and the contract the student athlete enters with the school they are playing for. While I get that argument and their is some validity to it, the NFL rule that requires a football player to be 3 years removed from high school really means that students are forced into these “contracts”. This is a form of socialism/ communism. A free market would allow top players to sign professional contracts directly out of high school. Or after 1 or 2 years of college. Forcing them to play college football for 3 years (if they want to play in the NFL) is wrong in my opinion. Sure it’s better for us, the fans of college football, but to me it completely invalidates the value of the scholarship as many students aren’t really there for the education, they are there because that is the only legitimate path to the ultimate goal of playing on Sunday.

I’m personally happy that they now have the opportunity to make money off their likeness. This will help many athletes, not just football and basketball players. Someone on ESPN Radio was talking about the female swimmer from Stanford who won all the Olympic gold medals. She could have made millions in college off her name image and likeness. Just one example.

Go Tigers. Beat Wofford!

Tell me how allowing athletes to profit from their name and likeness! How good would a quarterback or running back be without the offensive line! And how many offensive linemen jerseys have you seen? How many of these offensive linemen will profit from their name and likeness while making the stars look good? NONE! Not against a larger stipend for the players, but must be across the board for all players and all sports!
