Those beautiful facilities including the track and field program

Nov 5, 2020, 7:41 PM

now just going to waste in the future. It’s a sad story after all that has been given to making it great.

Sad, but not unexpected.
1. Loss of revenue due to COVID.
2. Title IX requirements.

Conclusion: Men's athletic program must be cut.

The only question is which one(s) will be cut.

I'm surprised it was track. But, I'm guessing the decision was made based on which sport is costing the school the most money.

The question was: What are the fewest number of sports we can cut? Let's start with them most expensive and work our way down. (I'm guessing cross country was cut because those guys also run track. Hard to recruit a cross country guy if you don't have a track team.)

I would expect track and field to be back in 3-4 years once revenues recover.

Maybe it's just me, but my dad ran cross country for four years at Miami Ohio starting in 1932. He paid his way through school working in the dining hall and in the athletic department at odd jobs. In HS he was captain of his foot ball team, captain of his basketball team, and player-manager of his baseball team. There were only twelve boys in his class.... His HS basketball team went to the National Championship basketball tournament in Chicago (parochial/Catholic schools) and defeated Bishop England out of Charleston, SC to go to the next round. My dad scored the first two points in that game and a future All American at Notre Dame named Chuck Sweeney said, "look out for that guy, Hogan!" Well, they lost, but while they were there for the tournament, my dad said "those girls from Northwestern were really something to remember!"

All this to say, my dad considered track and field the greatest sport on earth, the greatest athletes in any field. My son ran cross country at the S'burg Day School. I wrestled 4 yrs. in HS. and Clemson dropped that years ago due to Title IX. The fact we're dropping men's Cross Country and Track and Field is an abomination.

Go Tigers!!!
