Korncoot's Column in Sunday State Newspaper

Title: What Pickens choice means for USC: "Will Muschamp landing a commitment from defensive end Zach Pickens of T.L. Hanna High School set off a alarm around the state. The Gamecock's third year coach went into Dabo Swinney's backyard, and Kirby Smart's neighborhood, and landed a player both wanted. And while Swinney and Smart can sell the here and now for their top-four programs, Muschamp won out with the promise of a bright future for the talented Pickens in his up-and-coming program in Columbia." etc, etc. The article has Korncoot drooling.

I agree with the "bright future" comment. Dumpster fires can burn pretty darn brightly! Especially with all that methane gas Muschump's fueling it with. ????????

This is exactly why gamecock fans are so delusional
May 28, 2018, 1:27 AM
|

Because all of the median (TV, radio, print, and online) in Columbia paint an unrealistic view of the gamecock football program. If you listen to local sports talk radio in Columbia, read The State paper, and watch any of the local news you’d think the gamecocks are going to win 10 plus games every year. It’s as if they’re all competing to see who can be more fanatical about the gamecocks. Then when the season doesn’t go well they’re all shocked when the fans have such high expectations, it’s as if they all have short term memory loss.

SOS. The coots won 10 or more games for multiple years in a roll in recent years. What do they have to show for it? They won one east divisional championship and suffered the worst loss in the SEC championship game in SEC HISTORY. They play a weak schedule in a weak division and have never played in a BCS or college playoff game. Some good players are always going to go to cootville.

Here's the narrative in Columbia: SC signs a bunch of three-star and a couple of four-star guys and you hear this: "It isn't about star level. It's about how a kid fits the system." They land a rare five-star and suddenly stars matter. It becomes a "game changer" or you hear endlessly about how they are passing Clemson or UGA.

I don't think either Dabo or Kirby are sweating anything going on in Columbia. Every once in a while SC lands a guy either Clemson or UGA wanted. In most of those cases you never hear anything more about the kid.

Starters don't make for success
May 28, 2018, 8:54 AM
|

Depth makes for success. Put another four or five 4* DEs on that team and they'll have a full unit. This is much like we were when we got CJ; we were excited, but we had a long way to go. You have to start somewhere though but in order to have the big success they have to build on it ... go get Taj, Sammy, Martavious and Peake in a two year period and you have a start ... then get the other guys who could probably start anywhere else to back them up. No .... dream on South Carolina - you're a long, long way from being a legitimate threat to anybody.

Living in NECola I am constantly listening to Gamecock garbage over the media, as well as from fans. Muscrap reminds me of Tommy Bowden in comparison as regards building a program. Spurrier got lucky in 2008/2009 recruiting against Dabo, but Usuck is about to see a renewal of UF, UT and Texas A&M which will make matters much more difficult despite a new football center and academic building.
Usuck also sees Bama and Allbarn upcoming on the schedule and those games along with Georgia will be markers of Muscrap's program. Dabo just needs to keep doing his job and stay away from injuries and transfers to any extent and we will be just fine.
Go Tigers!

No DE who totally fears competition will sign w/ Clemson
May 28, 2018, 1:37 PM

Pickens knew he would red shirt as a freshman and would fight to make the 2-deep in his second year. Since he's sure he's NFL bound after three years, where would he possibly fit in at Clemson??
Only super confident guys like Trevor Lawrence walk into situations like that feeling that they are still good enough to compete and start.

Yep... We already have two freshman 5 star DE's (XT and KJ) on campus and this kid saw that he would have to compete for a starting position and was scared to do so.
So no Mr. Kornblut - this isn't some earthquake in recruiting but rather an indication of the lack of competition at Chicken U and that this kid is taking the lazy easy road to a starting job. If a recruit is afraid of competition then good riddance - we don't want them...

To be fair your coach also told these guys there would be room to play early... But alas, your DL all came back. Hence why Belk decided he'd rather go somewhere he could start sooner rather than later (plus he hated Clemson, the team, school and town). You guys think one national trophy in 36 years makes you the end all be all of CFB. Clemson aint the best program in the nation, or school for that matter. Get off your high horse.

True, but the first you cheated to get, well documented, the second you certainly earned... But that doesn't change the fact that you aren't entitled to all 5 star prospects just cause...

Wow, that's a stretch... Dude, in 79 and 80 you guys PAID players to come there. These two "violations" were self reported and for 2 assistance evaluating a player during the none-eval period and for a hotel giving a discount for our TE to stay there for 3 months. Not exactly the same as pay to play. But good try.

I guess you don't read too well.... So, you are saying that Clemson getting violations for 2 players that never went to Clemson, never played a down in any Div 1 program much less on that championship team, is worse than your boosters paying Damiere Byrd, who played for your school and NCAA made pay back what he was given...
You can't be serious.
And still, now you admit your team was caught cheating? Thought you acted like you didn't... Now it's you trying your best to argue which is worse? Pretty sad man, let it go.

There is a HUGE difference between the school paying players and a hotel discounting rooms... And had that story broke before the voting, you'd guys wouldn't had been in the Championship game. But being a CU fan you'll never see it for what it is.

Yes, there is...your team paid players that PLAYED for your school....Clemson paid guys that never signed nor played on the team (James Cofer & Terry Minor). You are correct, there is a big difference. your guys you were cited for ended up at your school...the 2 that Clemson was cited for didn't.

"The NCAA was examining alleged recruiting violations, including those involving two former Knoxville, Tenn., high school football players Terry Minor and James Cofer. After signing with Clemson, Minor and Cofer asked for their releases from scholarship. Clemson refused and Minor then alleged a booster offered him $1,000 to attend Clemson, Cofer said he was offered $500. Cofer and Minor were released and never played for Clemson."
Oh, and um, it was MORE than just "hotel"...But being a SCar fan, you'll never see it for what it is:
http://www.foxnews.com/sports/2012/04/27/ncaa-cites-south-carolina-for-failure-to-monitor.html
The NCAA also alleged that South Carolina received $8,000 in improper benefits from the Student Athlete Mentoring Foundation.
SAMF president Steve Gordon and treasurer Kevin Lahn were found to have paid for several unofficial visits by Gamecocks freshman receiver Damiere Byrd. Both Gordon and Lahn are South Carolina graduates.
Byrd was suspended for South Carolina's first four games and had to pay back $2,700.
Lahn also paid for a $3,350 dinner cruise on nearby Lake Murray for several prospects that was also attended by track coach Curtis Frye and 16 members of his program.
South Carolina said it would pay a fine of $18,500 for four athletes who competed in 2009 and 2010 while ineligible because of these violations."

You continue talking about 1981,78 presented with the facts and you still spout Chicken tales.
Everything EXCEPT THE BIGGEST STEROID SCANDAL in College Sports that 78 has talking about with you Chickens has happened in the last 10 years,up to the end of last season LOL.
Again Steroids, not to forget playing players in 67 ,with failing grades and still paying their scholarships and soon Tampering, all rank a little higher than money changing hands
That 67 incident got U guys ruled ineligible for the ACC Championship, If they could have proven anyone that got $$$ played in an actual game for Clemson in 81,The ACC would have gladly stripped Clemson of the title. They couldn't, so they added another bowl season ban

There was no "championship game" ... There was simply a vote by the difference polling services for a top team at the end of the season.
Clemson was voted MNC after the Orange Bowl and well after the story broke.
The Orange Bowl was simply one of the many bowls featuring big match-ups.
Like I said earlier .... you may be on the wrong forum.

and egggttt..wrong again: https://www.shakinthesouthland.com/2008/10/clemsons-ncaa-infractions-and-truth.html
They paid James Cofey and Terry Minor, two guys that never played for Clemson...heck, they never played for any Div 1 program.
"The infractions Clemson was found guilty of were awful; the athletic department fully deserved the punishment it received, which included steep reductions in scholarships (from 30 to 20 per) and a ban on TV appearances and postseason bowls for two years.
But if you read the summary (linked below and analyzed to an extent) of the infractions and penalties, you'll see that it does not include forfeiture of any games from 1981. Had these two players actually taken the field, it may not have been the case.
There is no proof that players who may have been given favors or cash were in any way responsible for the Tigers' success in 1981. If there's any out there, please post the link or a source of some kind. Cofer and Minor are the most obvious examples of that and they never even enrolled in Clemson."
^ There's the facts.....if you have any proof that players on that 1981 Championship team took money, any that PLAYED for Clemson...please, by all means, show us...show the newspapers...show the NCAA, because none that played on that team were ever named in the citations to date.

...and you do know that there wasn't a single player of the 1981 National Championship team that had any involvement in the scandal Clemson was cited for back then, right? In fact, the main two the entire thing focused on (James Cofey and Terry Minor) never signed with nor played a down for Clemson:
https://www.shakinthesouthland.com/2008/10/clemsons-ncaa-infractions-and-truth.html
^ Facts on it, by a guy who even states we should have been cited...but you might want to read that, if you really think the violations affected Clemson winning that Championship. There's a reason it was never stripped.
