Virginia on the ropes

Mar 29, 2019, 12:13 AM

If Virginia cannot come back tonight against the Ducks then they would lose back to back years to a double-digit seed.
16 seed and 12 seed this year = 28 total

Guess who holds the record for the highest seed lost to in back to back seasons
Your Favorite Barnyard Friends

South Carolina
15 seed to Coppin St
14 seed to Richmond

29 seed total

A Carolina embarrassing record which may never be broken

Well...Oregon is way better than a 12 seed!! ***

This is the problem with Virginia's style of basketball

Mar 29, 2019, 8:20 AM

They shorten games with their incredibly slow tempo and that makes upsets against them more likely. I know that style of play is their identity and all, but creating more possessions almost always favors the better team just as playing more games in a series is advantageous to the better team in a playoff. An underdog is much, much more likely to pull off an upset in a one-off scenario like the MLB wildcard game or any football playoff (though favorites win more often in football than other sports due to the nature of the sport).

curious...when exactly were they 'on the ropes?'

i didn't watch the game

according to the ESPN play-by-play the most they trailed in the 2nd half was 3 and were never behind the last 5 minutes of the game

LOL

The win probability algorithm on ESPN's gametracker gave

Mar 29, 2019, 11:40 AM [ in reply to Re: Virginia on the ropes ]

Oregon a 60% chance to win when they hit the 3 to go up 3 with 5:45 remaining. There was also a 3 minute stretch from around 3:30 to :30 where neither team scored a single point with UVA clinging to a 3 point lead. Just 1 bucket from Oregon during that stretch could've changed the outcome of the game.

I guess it comes down to how you define "being on the ropes." UVA never quite got into dire straights, but the game was certainly in doubt over the final 6+ minutes.

and that's what i was asking...wasn't trying to be snarky

i don't see being down 3 with almost 6 min. to play as anywhere close to 'the ropes'

down 3 with less than 1 min.? sure, but not with 5:45 left

The ‘OP’ was ready to go on some anti-ACC rant....

But the game ended up not fitting the narrative.
