The "why was Donnal pulled when he was HOT !" mystery
Feb 19, 2018, 12:08 PM
|
|
Us arm chair coaches are all scratching our heads wondering why was Donnal pulled when he had the "hot hand" ?
- Was his defense bad and Coach "B" really values defense (rightfully so) and he realized he needed a strong defense more then someone who was scoring LOTS of points ?
- Was Donnal still feeling the effects of his concussion and Coach B realized he was woozy and pulled him for health reasons ?
- Did Donnal signal he was sick ?, perhaps a surge of gastro intestinal distress and he really needed to come off the floor ASAP ? (if so, always eats a LIGHT meal before game, easy on the "stomach" ...)
- I can't think of anything else ...
Perhaps someone should just ask Coach B, there has to be sound explanation, the move just made no sense.

Nor did having a back up in the game with 1:30 to commit a ridiculous foul on a difficult three point shot with only a few seconds on the shot clock.....coaching??? There is a long pattern of last second losses that are due to in game management.

He did the exact same thing early in year in first loss to Temple. Donnal was hot, Thomas couldn't rebound or catch a pass, yet donnal didn't play the last 9 minutes of that game until like 30 seconds left by which point the game was over

Because he struggled guarding Carter on the block

simple as that. With Thomas in we could guard solo and that allowed Skara to focus on guarding Allen, who he shut down in the second half.

But by scoring ratio, we were ahead !

That's what I think also, he was pulled because he was having a hard time on D ... BUT, we were scoring more then Dook ... Looking back, stick Thomas back AND also keep Doonal in, because he is scoring points ... but then that leaves that Dook pric (white guy, forgot his name ...) free (Skara good on him) ... heck, go to a traditional two guard O and leave Donnal, Thmoas AND Skara in ... but then again our Point Guard has a busted head ... decisions, decisions

I've never made a dime coaching basketball, but ...

that's what I would have done. Go to a traditional two guard O and leave Donnal, Thmoas and Skara in.
Skara couldn't hit the ground with his hat in three tries but he's a good defender.

and scored a couple of baskets to get to the one point halftime deficit. Donnal was giving up more than he was getting, so by scoring ratio, we are losing except the overall team was better on offense in the first half than the second half. Reed was ill and ran out of gas, Thomas is still inconsistent as a scorer, and DeVoe played like he completely reverted to his freshman year... in a woulda, coulda, shoulda way, if DeVoe maintains his previous pace of scoring and defense, we win... and this is without Grantham and Mitchell... I'm not blaming DeVoe for the loss because others did step up, but his lack of production was truly the difference...

Yes, he hit two of them. So I'll ask again

if you put Thomas, Skara and Donnal in at the same time, who's Donnal going to guard?

since he's not much of a rebounder or shotblocker.

"[g]o to a traditional two guard O and leave Donnal, Thmoas [sic] and Skara in"
Not only are you taking help along the perimeter in moving the ball against the zone, but you're creating a big liability on defense.

the second half. So not sure about lack of defense from Donnal. I DO know that he gives us the potential for points which we need every game and yesterday’s subbing was questionable as the commentators were commenting as well.

According to the stats, Donnal is averaging 13 mpg and shooting 55.2% (16 for 29) from the 3pt line.
